Agari sells email authentication: it helps companies block fraudsters and phishers impersonating trusted senders such as corporate brands and government agencies.

More than $80M raised at a $275M valuation including the money, per PitchBook; the fifth and largest round, $40M, was led by Goldman Sachs in June 2018.

Patrick Peterson founded Agari in 2009 to stop email impersonation at scale, and ran it until June 2016, when he stepped aside to executive chairman and hired Ravi Khatod — a longtime cybersecurity sales executive and former Bromium COO — as CEO. Vidur Apparao joined as CTO in 2013.

The professional-CEO era produced scale but not dominance. Goldman Sachs led a $40M Series E in June 2018, and Cisco signed a resale deal in April 2018. But competition stiffened: Symantec released a similar product in February 2019, and San Francisco's Valimail was five years old and pushing the same SPF/DKIM/DMARC enforcement pitch. In early February 2019, Peterson quietly retook the CEO role — visible only via the company website, his LinkedIn, and a press release that never addressed the change. Khatod 'put the company in a really good position and he is exploring options outside email security', CMO Armen Najarian told Fortune; Apparao was 'exploring other options as well'. The stakes were regulatory as much as commercial: in 2017, the Department of Homeland Security mandated all federal agencies adopt these email security measures.

The timing maps to the market, not to failure: a fresh $40M Goldman-led round, a Cisco deal, and two new rivals landing in the same quarter.

Categories that get regulated (DHS's 2017 mandate) reward founders who can carry the origin story into government and enterprise sales.

The quietness was the tell — no succession narrative, no new vision announcement, just the founder's name back at the top of the website.

A 'quiet' founder reinstallment is rarely quiet inside: when a category gets hot, boards re-choose the storyteller who founded it over the operator they hired.

As of February 20, 2019, Peterson was back as CEO with the marketing chief narrating continuity, Khatod and Apparao departing, and the company positioned between its Goldman-backed war chest and the approaching Symantec and Valimail competition.
