How it started

Background

Astribot (星尘智能) was founded in Shenzhen in late 2022 by Lai Jie, the first employee of Tencent's Robotics Lab, and co-founder Dai Yuan; the six-person founding team came from Tencent's RoboticsX lab. The company's bet was that the path to home robots runs through hands, not legs: a wheeled platform with arms and fingers fast and precise enough to use human tools, rather than a walking humanoid.

After about a year of development, Astribot released the S1 in April 2024. The 'Hello World' demo showed the robot pulling a tablecloth out from under stacked wine glasses, shaving a cucumber, cooking, ironing and writing calligraphy — at full speed, with no visible teleoperation. New Atlas called it 'unlike anything we've seen so far,' and Chinese tech media (创业邦) covered the team's Tencent pedigree and the plan to commercialize S1 within the year.

The viral moment translated into capital. By June 2026 Astribot had closed three Series B rounds in three months totaling over ¥1 billion, with investors including the Liangxi Sci-Tech Innovation Fund, Thundersoft and Kede Education; 36Kr reported the company's valuation had passed ¥10 billion. The open question is whether a demo that wowed the internet becomes a product people actually buy.
