Rokid's AI-glasses bet: 40,000 units in 5 days, top seller of China's 2025 category
A decade of AR hardware pays off in 2025: Rokid's 49-gram AI glasses sell 40,000 in five days and top Tmall's Double 11 category—before giants pile in.
Rokid (灵伴科技 / Hangzhou Lingban Technology)
What the business is
Consumer AI+AR glasses maker whose Rokid Glasses line sells mostly in China, after a long detour through smart speakers and enterprise AR.
How it started
Founded in Hangzhou in 2014 by Zhu Mingming, a hardware veteran of Alibaba's experimental smart-device unit, Rokid shipped the Pebble smart speaker in 2016, pivoted to AR glasses, and through the 2020s kept betting that see-through display glasses—not VR headsets—would be the consumer form factor.
What happened
In Nov 2024 Rokid unveiled Rokid Glasses, a 49-gram monocle-style display frame for translation, navigation, teleprompter and photos, plugging into Qwen, Doubao, DeepSeek and Zhipu models. Sales opened 2025-09-01: 40,000 units in five days, against an internal full-year forecast of only 100,000–150,000, leaving backlog pushed into 2026. Double 11 2025 made it the category's top seller; Tmall's AI-glasses category grew ~2,500% that period.
How it ended up
Still running: scaling hard—by early 2026 the company reported 30k+ developers on its open YodaOS ecosystem, 100k+ community users across five continents, and early international expansion. The open question is durability: giants (Alibaba, Baidu, Xiaomi) entered with cheaper models, and the trade press reported high AI-glasses return rates industry-wide in 2026.
Background
Rokid was ten years old when its bet paid. Founded in Hangzhou in 2014 by Zhu Mingming, it spent years on hardware—smart speaker in 2016, AR glasses after—before concluding see-through glasses would carry computing. In November 2024 it unveiled Rokid Glasses: 49 grams, a waveguide display for translation, navigation, and camera, priced at ¥2,499 pre-sale, losing money per unit.
2025 was the waveform. Sales opened 1 September 2025; 40,000 units sold in five days, against a full-year forecast of 100,000–150,000, spilling into 2026. Rokid topped Tmall's Double 11 in AI glasses, plugged into Qwen, Doubao, DeepSeek, Zhipu, and took a 71% share of display-equipped segment (Omdia: 8.7M AI glasses shipped, +322% YoY).
The wager is not closed. By early 2026 Rokid claimed 30k+ developers and 100k+ community users, expanding overseas, but Alibaba, Baidu, Xiaomi entered with sub-¥2,000 models, the price rose to ¥3,299, and return rates were high. Rokid's bet: cheap, light, LLM-powered glasses beat Meta's audio frames and Apple's headsets—winning the Chinese shelf, not yet the economics.
What has to be true
- Weight and price were bottlenecks: Meta's audio-only Ray-Bans capped interaction at voice; Rokid's 49g display added quiet overlays, creating repeat-use reasons.
- Riding open Chinese LLMs let a mid-size vendor ship frontier features at commodity prices, deferring model R&D to giants.
- Ten years of iteration built supply-chain muscle—magnetic charging, waveguide yields, distribution—that 2024 rivals lacked.
- Category leadership invited giants: Alibaba, Baidu, Xiaomi entered cheaper, and a price war favored whoever owns the ecosystem.
What can be applied
A decade of hardware iteration lets a startup ride an AI wave, but without ecosystem or distribution moats, giants can replicate the product.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Rokid is still the poster child of China's AI-glasses boom but faces the classic wave-rider second act: giant competitors, thinning differentiation, and high return rates reported for the category in the trade press. Its counter-move is ecosystem work—an open-agent store, Tesla control, travel integrations, 89-language on-lens translation—and overseas retail expansion. Whether the ten-year bet compounds into a platform or gets absorbed into the giants' price war was unresolved at asOf.
