Astrotalk's paid-online-astrology bet reaches $1B on ₹1,176 Cr FY25 revenue
Noida marketplace for paid chat and call astrology grew into a $1B unicorn with ₹1,176 Cr FY25 revenue and a profit-funded ESOP buyback.
Astrotalk
What the business is
Astrotalk is a marketplace where users pay per consultation with astrologers over chat, call or video for horoscope, birth-chart, tarot, numerology and Vastu readings; it takes a fee on each session and also sells spiritual products such as gemstones and rudraksha through Astrotalk Store.
Starting capital:$34M raised across rounds led by Left Lane Capital ($20M, February 2024) and a $14M round in June 2024; early backer Elev8 Venture Partners.
How it started
Puneet Gupta and Anmol Jain founded Astrotalk in Noida in 2017 as a marketplace connecting consumers to astrologers for paid consultations. The core observation was that astrology demand in India was large but fragmented — advice happened in person or by phone, quality was unverifiable and payment was informal — so an app that let users buy a session from a listed astrologer over chat or call could own a trade that predated the internet.
What happened
Astrotalk scaled on India's chat-first mobile behavior: FY24 operating revenue reached ₹651 Cr with ₹100 Cr net profit, then FY25 operating revenue grew to ₹1,176 Cr with net profit of ₹250 Cr, according to Inc42. It raised $34M in 2024 from Left Lane Capital and others. In November 2024 it launched Astrotalk Store for spiritual products, which generated more than ₹140 Cr in its first 12 months and reached a ₹300 Cr ARR. The company says more than 5 crore users downloaded its app on Google Play, and it runs corporate well-being partnerships with companies including PhysicsWallah and WeWork; advertising regulators and consumer-protection law have meanwhile begun scrutinizing astrology ads.
No ending yet — it is still running.
Background
Astrotalk is a marketplace where users pay astrologers for horoscope, birth-chart, tarot, numerology and Vastu consultations over chat, call or video, with the company taking a fee per session. Founded in Noida in 2017 by Puneet Gupta and Anmol Jain, it bet that India's large astrology demand — historically an in-person, cash trade with unverifiable quality — would move to an app with listed astrologers and built-in payments.
The bet paid off as India's mobile-first users adopted paid chat consultations. Astrotalk reported ₹651 Cr operating revenue and ₹100 Cr net profit in FY24, then ₹1,176 Cr operating revenue and ₹250 Cr net profit in FY25, and says its revenue run-rate crossed ₹2,500 Cr, with more than 4 crore users served and over 5 crore Google Play downloads.
The company raised $34M in 2024 — $20M from Left Lane Capital in February and $14M in June at a ₹2,400 Cr pre-money valuation — and expanded beyond consultations into spiritual e-commerce in November 2024. Astrotalk Store, selling gemstones, rudraksha and other remedial products, generated over ₹140 Cr in its first 12 months and reached a ₹300 Cr run-rate, becoming a second revenue engine and a route into offline retail and international markets.
In August 2026 Astrotalk joined India's unicorn club: a buyback of ESOPs from more than 100 employees valued the company at $1B (about ₹9,541 Cr), nearly four times its June 2024 valuation, and was financed from the company's own profits. The milestone came with rising scrutiny of astrology advertising under Indian consumer and data-protection law, which the company must navigate as it scales.
What has to be true
- The demand already existed and was paid-for offline; the startup's job was removing friction, not creating a market.
- Chat and call consultations made the service private and convenient, unlocking users who would never visit an astrologer in person.
- A marketplace with listed astrologers and a fee per session gave the company clean, recurring monetization from day one.
- Profitability before growth let Astrotalk fund its unicorn-milestone liquidity event from internal accruals instead of new venture capital.
What can be applied
Take a trade people already pay for offline and remove the friction and fear: Astrotalk didn't create astrology demand, it productized payments and trust for consultations that were already happening.
Aftermath
As of 2026-08-12 Astrotalk is a profitable, scaling unicorn: FY25 operating revenue was ₹1,176 Cr with ₹250 Cr net profit, the company claims an ARR above ₹2,500 Cr, and it is expanding Astrotalk Store into offline retail in Delhi NCR and an international e-commerce site for the US. Regulatory attention on astrology advertising — under ASCI guidance, the Consumer Protection Act and India's digital data-protection law — is a growing constraint the company must manage alongside growth.
