Atoms bets an AI agent team, not a copilot, runs your startup: PH #3, $31M
MetaGPT-maker DeepWisdom's Atoms bets an AI team can run a real business: PH #3 launch Jan 2026, ~$31M raised
Atoms (DeepWisdom, formerly MGX / MetaGPT)
What the business is
Atoms (atoms.dev) is DeepWisdom's vibe-business platform: named AI agents research demand, plan, build full-stack apps, deploy, and run SEO and ads, with auth, database, hosting and Stripe payments built in, so users launch revenue-generating websites by prompting.
Starting capital:~RMB 220M (US$31M) raised in H1 2025 from Ant Group, Cathay Capital, Jinqiu, MindWorks, Baidu Ventures and Concept Capital; MGX had launched earlier on server and model credit from UCloud and AWS.
How it started
Wu Chenglin, a former Huawei and Tencent AI engineer, founded DeepWisdom in 2019 after years of labor-intensive enterprise AI projects convinced him AI tools should act like companies, not like engineers. DeepWisdom open-sourced MetaGPT in June 2023 (~58.8k GitHub stars), its interns rebuilt Manus as OpenManus in one night, and in Feb 2025 — with funding still unclosed and cloud bills on credit — the team shipped commercial MGX.
What happened
MGX passed 500k registered users and $1M ARR within a month of launch with no paid marketing; by Sept 2025 it drew ~1.2M monthly visits and generated 10k+ apps a day (company figures via 36Kr/KrASIA). H1 2025 rounds brought ~RMB 220M (~US$31M) from Ant Group, Cathay Capital, Baidu Ventures and others. On 2026-01-13 DeepWisdom relaunched MGX as Atoms, landing #3 Product of the Day with 256 upvotes; a 2026-05-28 founder interview reports 1M+ customers across 100+ countries.
How it ended up
Still live and scaling as of Sept 2026: Atoms is marketed around named agents (Iris research, Emma PM, Mike team lead, Alex engineer, Sarah SEO, Adrian ads) and DeepWisdom is opening its first overseas office in Silicon Valley.
Background
Atoms is a "vibe business" platform from Shenzhen-based DeepWisdom, the startup behind open-source MetaGPT and OpenManus. Where vibe-coding rivals generate front-end prototypes, Atoms dispatches named agents — Iris for deep research, Emma as product manager, Alex as engineer, Sarah for SEO, Adrian for ads — to research demand, build full-stack apps with auth, databases and Stripe payments, deploy them, and market them, so a prompt can become a live revenue-generating website.
The bet grew out of founder Wu Chenglin's conviction, formed at Huawei and Tencent, that AI coding tools should behave like companies rather than engineers. DeepWisdom validated multi-agent workflows in public first: MetaGPT (June 2023, ~58.8k GitHub stars) and OpenManus established its credibility, and in Feb 2025 the commercial product MGX launched on unpaid cloud credit, claiming 500k registered users and $1M ARR in its first month.
On 2026-01-13 MGX was renamed and relaunched as Atoms, finishing #3 Product of the Day on Product Hunt with 256 upvotes and 44 comments. The H1 2025 rounds totalled ~RMB 220M (~US$31M) from Ant Group, Cathay Capital and others, and a May 2026 founder interview reports 1M+ customers in 100+ countries as the company pushes toward Lovable-scale growth with an 80+ person team.
What has to be true
- MetaGPT proved SOP-driven multi-agent coding worked at ~58.8k GitHub stars, giving the AI-team pitch years of open-source credibility before commercialization.
- Vibe-coding rivals mostly sold prototypes; Atoms' wedge was making the output a business — payments, deployment, SEO and ads built in from the start.
- Routing multiple open-source models (DeepSeek, Qwen) made Atoms cheaper than closed-model rivals, which mattered to the price-sensitive users it targeted.
- The MGX-to-Atoms rename and Jan 2026 consumer launch let the product ride Product Hunt virality after 500k+ users had already validated it.
- ~US$31M from Ant Group, Cathay Capital and Baidu Ventures funded an 80+ person bet that speed still requires manpower, not one-person companies.
What can be applied
When AI makes app generation cheap, the moat moves to the business layer — payments, deployment, marketing — and open-source credibility (MetaGPT) let a no-budget launch go viral.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-04 Atoms is live at atoms.dev and scaling: marketing centers on a named AI team (Iris, Emma, Mike, Alex, Sarah, Adrian) that researches, builds, deploys and markets apps, and the founder reports 1M+ customers in 100+ countries as of May 2026. DeepWisdom employs 80+ people, plans a Silicon Valley office, and keeps its research-to-open-source loop (Foundation Agents org 150k+ GitHub stars, NeurIPS papers). Growth figures are company-reported; the Jan 2026 PH launch record shows #3 Product of the Day with 256 upvotes via hunted.space.
