Banyu bets better seedlings can move Indonesia up the seaweed value chain

Founded Dec 2023, Banyu raised $1.25M from Intudo to make Indonesia's fragmented seaweed supply chain more productive for 1M+ smallholder farmers

The betIndonesia's 1M+ seaweed smallholders will adopt better seedlings, so Banyu bets on the largest high-volume seedling producer to lift yields and climb the value chainLive

What the business is

Banyu is a technology-enabled, integrated seaweed company in Indonesia: it supplies high-quality seedlings and farming know-how to smallholder farmers, then connects seaweed to food and ingredient buyers plus emerging biofertilizer and bioplastics markets.

Starting capital$1.25M seed round led by Intudo Ventures (announced January 2025)

How it started

Founded in December 2023 by Dodon Yamin (CEO), Anis Nur Aini (Chief Sustainability Officer) and Anthony Kwik (President Commissioner), combining seaweed farming, microfinance and sustainability experience. Indonesia is the world's largest producer of tropical seaweed, with over one million people earning from cultivation, but the industry suffered from low-quality inputs, opaque prices and little technology.

What happened

Intudo Ventures led a US$1.25 million seed round announced in January 2025 to build a seedling cultivation laboratory and nursery, expand farming and exporting operations, and scale proprietary seedling production toward becoming Indonesia's largest high-volume seedling producer, targeting Sulawesi first.

How it ended up

Running: after the seed round Banyu was expanding seedling production and farming and export operations, supplying international FMCG and ingredient companies and working toward biofertilizer and bioplastics applications.

Background

Banyu is a Jakarta-based, technology-enabled seaweed company founded in December 2023. Its bet: Indonesia is the world's largest producer of tropical seaweed and home to more than a million people who make a living from cultivation, yet the industry still runs on low-quality inputs, labour-intensive methods, opaque prices and almost no technology — so upgrading the upstream supply chain is a business, not just an aid project.

The company's core innovation is proprietary spore seedling production, which has shown yield increases of up to 20 percent over the common practice of reusing derivative seedlings from previous harvests. Banyu supplies those seedlings plus training and advanced farming techniques to smallholder farmers, then works with traders and downstream processors to match supply to specific buyer requirements — species, quantity, and environmental and social standards.

In January 2025, Intudo Ventures led a US$1.25 million seed round that Banyu used to establish a seedling cultivation laboratory and nursery, expand farming and export operations, and scale toward becoming Indonesia's largest high-volume seedling producer. Initial expansion targets Sulawesi, the country's seaweed production capital, before moving to other producing regions.

Banyu's leadership pairs seaweed farming, microfinance and sustainability backgrounds — CEO Dodon Yamin, Chief Sustainability Officer Anis Nur Aini and President Commissioner Anthony Kwik. Buyers include international FMCG and ingredient companies, with emerging applications in biofertilizers and bioplastics.

What has to be true

  • Better inputs are the highest-leverage point: proprietary spore seedlings lift yields up to 20% versus derivative seedlings, raising farmer income without changing the whole value chain overnight.
  • Vertical integration fixes trust: by coordinating farmers, traders and processors, Banyu can offer buyers transparency on quality and provenance that fragmented spot markets cannot.
  • Sulawesi-first focus gives a dense cluster of farmers to prove the model before expanding to other seaweed regions.
  • Intudo's backing signals investor belief that Indonesia can move from raw commodity export toward higher-value seaweed products.

What can be applied

In fragmented commodity chains the highest-leverage fix is often upstream — upgrading seeds nobody modernized can lift yields and pricing power for thousands of smallholders at once.

Aftermath

As of 22 January 2025, Banyu was using the Intudo-led seed round to build a seedling cultivation laboratory and nursery and expand its farming and exporting operations, with the goal of becoming Indonesia's largest high-volume seedling producer. Its proprietary seedling methods had demonstrated yield increases of up to 20 percent, and it was supplying international food and ingredient companies while developing markets for biofertilizers and bioplastics, starting from Sulawesi.
