What the business is
Consumer health brands — Saridon for pain, Bepanthen for dermatology, Alka-Seltzer for digestive wellness — sold through traditional pharmacy trade and quick commerce.
The bet
That self-care can anchor Bayer's India play: 100 million households reached, up from 45 million, via Alka-Seltzer's digestive launch and Saridon's outlet push.
How it started
Bayer formally set up its consumer health division in India in 2021 and expanded across pain management, nutrition, dermatology and digestive wellness. A few years in, it entered dermatology with skincare brand Bepanthen. By 2026, South Asia head Sandeep Verma was arguing self-care could be 'a very critical pillar' in India's ambition of becoming an economic superpower — and that India would be the world's third-largest consumer health market within five years, after the US and China.
What happened
The 2026 push put digestive wellness at the front. Bayer's studies found almost 70 percent of Indians — seven in ten — have at least one digestive ailment every week, and Verma framed the ambition as category creation: 'We are not just entering this antacid category... we want to enter the digestive wellness category by focusing on gut health.' Distribution is the lever: Saridon is to grow from about 200,000 to 350,000 outlets over three years, overall reach is expected to approach 600,000 chemists — close to half of India's estimated 1.2 million pharmacies — and both traditional trade and quick commerce are to drive the expansion, with Verma calling quick commerce a growing part of the India strategy.
What has to be true
It is a large company's concrete new-market bet, with a named division, a named launch brand and a dated executive interview behind it.
The commitment is measurable: 45 million to 100 million households in four years, Saridon from 200,000 to 350,000 outlets, Alka-Seltzer to 100,000 stores.
The entry logic is quantified — a Rs 2,500 crore digestive market where seven in ten Indians report a weekly digestive ailment.
It folds quick commerce into a century-old OTC brand's distribution, a channel shift specific to the Indian market.
What can be applied
In emerging consumer markets the moat is physical distribution: brand heritage gets you the launch, but outlet count — pushed toward half a country's pharmacies — is what compounds.
Aftermath
As of May 20, 2026, Bayer's consumer health division was rolling out Alka-Seltzer to about 100,000 Indian stores, expanding Saridon toward 350,000 outlets, and targeting 100 million households reached within four years, up from about 45 million. The division, set up in 2021, had already expanded across pain management, nutrition, dermatology and digestive wellness, and Verma projected India would rank among the world's top three consumer health markets within five years. The expansion was to run through both traditional trade and quick commerce channels.
