What the business is
Fermented animal-cell cultivated chicken, produced at industrial scale without slaughter
The bet
Scale first: building the only large-scale cultivated-meat plant would prove the tech, reignite investor interest and make Believer the sector's bellwether.
Starting capital
$347M Series B (Dec 2021), the largest ever in cultivated meat at signing; roughly $400M total. Later a $25M term loan from Ameris Bank.
How it started
Hebrew University bioengineer Yaakov Nahmias founded Future Meat Technologies in 2018 in Rehovot, Israel. It rebranded as Believer Meats in late 2021 and, flush with ADM-led money, picked Wilson, North Carolina for a US flagship plant.
What happened
Gray Construction signed a 2023 design-build deal and finished construction in August 2025. On July 24, 2025 Believer announced its FDA 'no questions' letter — the fifth firm approved — plus a completed plant GEA sized at 12,000+ tons of cultivated chicken a year. But bioreactor commissioning kept slipping, sector funding collapsed from $989M (2021) to $65M (2025), and no new round materialized.
How it ended up
Mass layoffs on December 1, 2025; on December 8 Gray sued for $34M in unpaid bills (alleging $36.4M owed). The company entered receivership in February 2026, and UPSIDE Foods' $50M stalking-horse bid for the $150M plant was terminated in August 2026 with no qualifying bids received.
What has to be true
It built ahead of the process: with bioreactors still failing commissioning, the plant was concrete before the bioprocess was proven — the 'cart before the horse' trap peers warned of.
It was sized to a financing climate that vanished: the 2021 round assumed follow-on capital would be available; sector funding instead fell 93% by 2025.
Capital intensity with no revenue bridge: a ~$150M facility, a $25M secured bank loan and $34-36M of construction payables left no runway once the Series B was spent.
Being the bellwether raised the bar: as the only large-scale plant, its slip became the sector's slip, making an already wary investor base warier.
What can be applied
Regulatory triple-crown plus a flagship factory is not a business: a plant sized for a market that cheap capital built, and cheap capital abandoned. Validate the process before pouring the concrete.
Aftermath
As of late August 2026 the estate is being dismantled in two threads. In the US, receiver Kevin Sink of BDO is liquidating the $150M Wilson facility: UPSIDE Foods' $50M stalking-horse bid was the baseline in June, then terminated August 14, and the August 17 auction was cancelled after no qualifying bids arrived — though UPSIDE says it remains interested. Ameris Bank holds a $25M senior secured loan. In Israel, trustee Yoel Freilich is fielding IP bids industry-wide. Insiders noted the firm had 'the trifecta' — approvals and a full-size plant — yet never reached production.
