Black Forest Labs came out of stealth on Aug 1, 2024 with $31M in seed funding led by Andreessen Horowitz and three FLUX.1 models built by Robin Rombach, Patrick Esser and Andreas Blattmann — the researchers who created Stable Diffusion at Stability AI. Based in Freiburg, Germany, it aimed to make open image-generation models that rivaled Midjourney and DALL-E 3.
What happened
Two weeks after launch, xAI's Grok chatbot began generating images with FLUX.1, making BFL famous overnight — and controversial, since Grok's image generator had few guardrails. Within two months TechCrunch reported BFL was raising $100M at a $1B valuation. The Grok deal ended in early 2025 after xAI built its own image model, but BFL signed partnerships with Mistral's Le Chat and Deutsche Telekom, then in Sept 2025 a $140M multi-year deal with Meta ($35M year one, $105M year two). In Nov 2025 it released FLUX.2; in Dec 2025 it closed a $300M Series B at $3.25B led by AMP and Salesforce Ventures, with Temasek, Northzone and Air Street Capital participating, taking total funding past $450M.
