Buser's bus bet: dynamic pricing vs Brazil's cartel; $100M revenue, first profit
Brazilian intercity-bus aggregator prices seats like airlines; 12M passengers, US$100M+ revenue, first operating profit, now buying rivals.
Buser
What the business is
Buser is a Brazilian intercity-travel platform that sells charter and marketplace bus tickets, prices them dynamically like airlines, and plans routes and demand with machine learning.
Starting capital:US$500K seed (Canary, Yellow Ventures, Fundação Estudar), Series A from Valor Capital and Monashees, 2019 Series B led by SoftBank and Globo Ventures, and a R$700M Series C led by Lightrock in 2021.
How it started
In 2016, while planning his wedding in Bahia, Marcelo Abritta found his family paying roughly double for individual tickets versus chartering a bus; he co-founded Buser in June 2017 with Marcelo Vasconcellos, both ITA graduates.
What happened
Incumbent operators sued and lobbied as Buser grew; Brazil's ANTT later recognized its operations as legal. When interest rates rose in 2022, Buser cut staff from 550 to 240, exited cities that couldn't break even within six months, and turned cash-flow positive in H2 2023.
How it ended up
Buser posted its first operating profit in 2024: revenue above US$100M, R$100M operating profit, ~12M passengers across 250+ cities, 80% average occupancy vs ~60% for traditional operators; 2025 plan was +50% revenue to US$150M and M&A with incumbents.
Background
Buser is a Brazilian intercity-travel platform: it sells charter and marketplace bus seats, prices them dynamically like airlines, and uses machine learning to plan routes, departure times and stops. The founders' bet was that Brazil's regulated, fixed-route bus market — worth about R$15 billion a year — would shift to a data-driven operator that fills seats instead of protecting licensed lines.
The idea came in 2016 when Abritta, planning his wedding, realized a chartered bus cost roughly half the sum of individual round-trip tickets. He and co-founder Marcelo Vasconcellos launched in June 2017, raised US$500K in seed, then Series A from Valor Capital and Monashees, a 2019 Series B led by SoftBank and Globo Ventures, and a R$700M Series C led by Lightrock in 2021. Incumbents fought back with lawsuits, but Brazil's ANTT later recognized Buser's operations as legal.
When rates rose in 2022, Buser cut from 550 to 240 employees, exited cities that couldn't break even within six months, and turned cash-flow positive in H2 2023. In 2024 it posted its first operating profit — revenue above US$100M, R$100M operating profit, ~20% growth — serving ~12 million passengers across 250+ cities at 80% average occupancy. For 2025 it targeted US$150M revenue and started M&A talks with traditional operators.
What has to be true
- The bet is explicit: a fragmented, state-regulated R$15B market can be consolidated by a digital operator that prices dynamically.
- Traction is specific and dated: US$100M+ 2024 revenue, R$100M operating profit, 12M passengers and 80% occupancy, per Bloomberg Línea and PEGN.
- The story shows the regulatory fight: incumbent-cartel lawsuits, then ANTT recognition, a common path for LatAm market entrants.
- The 2022 efficiency pivot (550 to 240 staff, cash-positive in H2 2023) is a transferable post-zero-rate playbook.
What can be applied
When incumbents own licensed routes and fixed prices, attack demand: charter economics undercut tariffs, machine-run occupancy beats protected supply, and efficiency discipline outlasts the lawsuits.
Aftermath
As of the 2025-02-18 Bloomberg Línea interview, Buser was exploring M&A with traditional operators, hiring ex-Lightrock's Rodolfo Juliani as Director of Strategy and New Business with a pipeline that included companies similar in size. In February 2025 it raised R$30M in media-for-equity from 4Equity to double its marketing budget. Competition is rising: Germany's Flixbus has entered Brazil and Uber launched a São Paulo–Guarulhos shuttle; Buser's high-season goal was 1.5M passengers from December 2024 to February 2025. No newer public milestones were found as of 2026-09-02.
