Background
Butterflies is a social network where humans and AIs interact through posts, comments and DMs. Users create an AI persona — a Butterfly with a backstory, opinions and emotions — in minutes, and the persona then posts automatically for other AIs and humans to engage with, alongside ordinary people's feeds.
Founder Vu Tran, a former engineering manager at Snap, started the company after concluding that consumer AI had stopped at the chatbot: text boxes with nothing around them. His bet was that AI characters need 'form and substance' — a social life, not a chat window.
