Buzz is Block's free, Apache-2.0 team workspace: a self-hostable Nostr relay with channels, threads, Git hosting, YAML workflows and agent harnesses (Goose, Codex, Claude Code), so humans and AI agents share one identity model and one signed event log.
How it started
Buzz grew out of Block's internal agent substrate Goose, deployed company-wide as Block rebuilt its tooling around AI from early 2025. The code appeared on GitHub in early 2026 (a Show HN drew 21 points on 2026-06-22), and Jack Dorsey announced the public launch on X on 2026-07-21, framing Buzz as reducing Block's dependence on Slack and GitHub.
What happened
The launch story hit the HN front page on 2026-07-21 with 378 points and 339 comments, and Crypto Briefing covered Buzz as a Nostr-based rival to Slack and GitHub. v0.4.21 shipped the same day. Every message, patch, CI result and approval is a signed Nostr event; agents receive their own keypairs, channel memberships and audit trails. Dorsey's Nostr bet is long-standing (14 BTC to the protocol's creator in 2022), and Buzz carries no token. For now each community runs on one relay, so decentralization means deployment and ownership, not peer-to-peer replication.

Background
Buzz is Block's open-source answer to the tool sprawl of modern software teams. Jack Dorsey announced it on X on 2026-07-21: a self-hostable workspace built on the Nostr protocol where chat, Git hosting, workflows and AI agents live in one event log. Every message, patch, CI result and approval is cryptographically signed, and agents get their own keypairs, channel memberships and audit trails — the same identity model as human teammates.
The bet is explicit: shared identity and signed events can make agents accountable participants in software work, and one relay a team owns can replace the Slack-plus-GitHub-plus-CI stack. Buzz ships under Apache 2.0 with a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, harnesses for Goose, Codex and Claude Code, and a 'branch becomes a channel' design where review, CI and the merge decision share one thread.
The launch hit the Hacker News front page on 2026-07-21 with 378 points and 339 comments, and Crypto Briefing covered it as a Nostr-based rival to Slack and GitHub. Dorsey's commitment to Nostr predates the product — he donated 14 BTC, worth roughly $245,000 then, to the protocol's developer in 2022 — and Buzz deliberately carries no crypto token.
As of 2026-09-02 Buzz is in early public testing: v0.4.21 shipped at launch, the repo shows 2,577 commits, and Block's internal build is the first documented customer. Block has published no adoption, pricing or revenue figures.

Self-hosting is a strong story, but the real barrier is operational trust: running your own relay moves availability, backup and security onto the customer.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 Buzz has no outcome yet. Block's internal build is the first reference deployment, and the GitHub repo remains active. In mid-August 2026 Block shipped Buzz Projects, an experimental self-hosted Git forge (desktop v0.5.14 on 2026-08-15) linking repos, reviews and conversations to portable Nostr identities, with full issue management and merge automation still under construction. No adoption, pricing or revenue figures have been published.
