What the business is
Cabinet Health sells over-the-counter medicines in refillable glass bottles with compostable refill pouches, aiming to reduce and eventually eliminate single-use plastics in medicine.
The bet
The founders accepted lower equity terms on the show in exchange for a proposed investment and operational support from Kevin O’Leary and Tony Xu; this was an on-screen agreement, not proof of a completed financing.
Starting capital
The televised terms were $500,000 for 7%, split between Kevin O’Leary and Tony Xu, plus a royalty of up to 2% per product until each received $500,000. These were proposed deal terms, not verified cash received.
How it started
Co-founders Achal Patel and Russ Gong launched Cabinet Health in October 2019 to get single-use plastic out of medicine packaging.
What happened
On Shark Tank they sought $500,000 for 2.5% — a $20 million valuation. Mark Cuban said he had to 'call a little bit of B.S.', doubting why a company with those sales wasn't profitable; the founders said per-unit profit was being reinvested in R&D. Barbara Corcoran backed out first; Kevin O'Leary offered $500K for 12.5% ($4M valuation), guest shark Tony Xu $500K for 10% ($5M), and Lori Greiner declined to join, hating the valuation.
How it ended up
Gong and Patel accepted the joint offer on the show: $500,000 for a combined 7% plus royalties. The equity terms imply about $7.1 million, before accounting for royalty obligations, compared with their $20 million asking valuation. A later founder interview said the deal had not yet been finalized.
What has to be true
The proposed partnership offered access to O’Leary and Xu’s operating experience. Its value would depend on the deal closing and on the support actually delivered.
The royalty created an additional obligation beyond the equity stake; it should be assessed alongside the headline valuation.
What can be applied
Compare the operational help, equity and royalty obligations in an offer. Distinguish a televised agreement from a completed investment and an asking valuation from a previous funding round.
Aftermath
In a Green Matters interview published on February 14, 2023, co-founder Russell Gong discussed the on-show agreement; the report stated that it had not been finalized. CNBC had reported an October 2023 break-even target. These sources do not establish that the financing later closed or that the profitability target was achieved.
