What the business is
A biopharmaceutical company developing cancer treatments.
The bet
That stopping both clinical programs and pursuing a merger or sale preserves more value than continuing to fund them in a closed biotech funding market.
How it started
On 6 October 2026 Caribou said it would cease development of vispa-cel, designed to treat lymphoma, and CB-011, meant to treat myeloma. Despite promising results in trials of the products, chief executive Rachel Haurwitz said the current financing environment for the therapies had made it increasingly difficult to get enough funding to advance the programs.
What happened
Shares dropped 36% to 73 cents in after-hours trading. The board approved initiating a strategic alternatives review, which could include consideration of a merger or sale, with no timeline set. Caribou plans a substantial reduction in workforce expected to be mostly complete in the fourth quarter of 2026, with $15 million to $19 million in restructuring expenses, mostly severance and trial wind-down costs.
What has to be true
Both programs had promising trial results, but Haurwitz said the financing environment made it increasingly difficult to fund them.
The board chose a strategic alternatives review — merger or sale — over continuing clinical work it could not finance.
Restructuring costs of $15 million to $19 million, mostly severance and trial wind-down, are smaller than carrying two unfundable programs.
What can be applied
Promising trial results do not pay runway. When the funding market shuts, stopping both programs and selling the company can beat nursing two trials toward an unreachable raise.
Aftermath
As of 6 October 2026 Caribou expected the workforce reduction to be mostly complete in the fourth quarter of 2026, with most of the $15 million to $19 million in restructuring expenses recognised in that quarter. It also planned to terminate contracts, resolve intellectual property licensing arrangements and sublease its facilities. CFO Sriram Ryali agreed to step down once Caribou signs a binding definitive agreement for a strategic alternative.
