Charm bets the terminal wins AI coding; Crush hits 25k stars, 367-pt HN launch

Crush is Charm's open-source terminal-based AI coding agent: a TUI that wires your tools, code and workflows into any LLM, with LSP context and MCP support, monetized through Hyper, Charm's subscription inference service.

Developers would rather code with AI in the terminal than a heavy IDE — and Charm's five years of terminal tooling plus its own model service would let it own that layer.

Charm was founded in 2019 in New York to make the command line glamorous, building open-source terminal tooling that grew to 150,000+ GitHub stars across its ecosystem. In mid-2025, Kujtim Hoxha built a terminal-based AI coding agent that got Charm's attention — the founder flew to Prishtina, Kosovo to meet him, and on 30 July 2025 announced the project, renamed Crush, had 'come home to Charm'.

Crush launched to a 367-point, 235-comment Hacker News discussion on 2025-07-30 and became one of the fastest-growing terminal agents of 2025: ROSS Index Q4 measured 14.3k stars with 14.3x growth, and by June 2026 the repo had 25,233 stars. The product supports a wide range of models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, OpenRouter, local models and more), uses LSPs for code context, ships three MCP transports, and works across macOS, Linux, Windows, Android, FreeBSD and NetBSD. Charm launched Hyper, a subscription-based, privacy-focused (zero data retention) inference service as Crush's official provider.

Still scaling: the repository remained live and actively released through September 2026, with a desktop app in beta and Hyper expanding as the commercial layer.

Developers already live in the terminal — it is scriptable, fast and integrates with existing workflows, making it a natural home for agentic coding.

Charm owned the underlying UI stack (Bubble Tea, Lip Gloss, Glamour), so Crush was built on infrastructure Charm itself had perfected for five years.

Hiring the creator instead of copying the idea preserved speed and legitimacy, and the HN launch converted existing Charm goodwill into immediate adoption.

Monetizing the model layer via Hyper (subscription inference) worked with the open-source core instead of fighting it with per-seat licensing.

Owning the platform beneath a breakout product is a moat: Charm's terminal UI libraries let it acquire Crush, distribute it to an existing ecosystem, and monetize the model layer instead of the tool.

As of September 2026, Crush is still scaling: the GitHub repository (charmbracelet/crush) is live with regular releases, a beta desktop app, an agent-skills system and shared-workspace features. ROSS Index Q4 2025 recorded 14.3k stars with 14.3x growth and $9.9M raised for Charm; DEV Community's GitHub-API check put the repo at 25,233 stars on 2026-06-12.
