How it started
In July 2024, Indiana developer Saoud Rizwan spent a week in his mom's garage in Terre Haute building a demo for Anthropic's Build with Claude hackathon: give an AI model the same tools a developer uses - file access, terminal commands, and codebase navigation. The demo didn't win, but Rizwan launched the project publicly in October 2024 as Claude Dev, an open-source VS Code extension.
What happened
The project spread by word of mouth - developers told developers. By July 2025 it had 2.7M installs, 48k GitHub stars, 48k X followers, and 20k Discord members, with Samsung and SAP already using it. Cline raised $32M in combined Seed and Series A led by Emergence Capital with Pace Capital, launched Cline Teams for enterprises, and was renamed from Claude Dev to Cline around the same time. In January 2026 Cline passed 5M installs and 57k stars and committed $1M in credits to fund open-source projects.

Still live and scaling: a team of more than 35 (many of them former open-source contributors), Cline Teams for enterprise, expansion to JetBrains, CLI, and SDK, and the largest traffic of any user base on the Vercel AI Gateway.
Background
Cline is an open-source AI coding agent that lives inside VS Code and other editors, reading and writing files, running terminal commands, and browsing the web. It began as Claude Dev, a demo Saoud Rizwan built in July 2024 in his mom's garage for an Anthropic hackathon: give the model the same tools a developer uses. The demo didn't win, but Rizwan launched it publicly in October 2024.
The bet was that inference should not be the business model. Cline lets developers bring their own API keys, pick any frontier model, and pay true API cost with full visibility - no credits systems, no throttled context, no hidden model routing. That transparency became the product story, and it spread through developer communities by word of mouth.

What has to be true
- Open source plus bring-your-own-keys removed the trust barrier: security teams could audit the code and keep it on their own infrastructure, which is why Zero Trust enterprises chose Cline.
- 'Inference is not the business' was a positioning gift: while rivals hid model costs behind credits, Cline's transparent pricing let developers use the best model at true cost.
- Word-of-mouth distribution: the 2026 origin-story post says the growth was not manufactured - developers told other developers that it actually worked.
- The community became the product team: the contributor base grew 4,704% year over year, and many contributors were hired full-time.
- Enterprise demand followed grassroots adoption: compliance-driven companies adopted first, creating a paid Teams product without a sales-led pivot.
What can be applied
Transparency can be the wedge: Cline's no-markup, bring-your-own-keys stance gave developers a reason to trust an AI that touches their code, and word of mouth - not ads - carried it to 5M installs.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Cline is live and scaling. The company reports more than 5 million installs across VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Windsurf, and OpenVSX, roughly 57k GitHub stars, and a team of over 35 built largely from open-source contributors. It offers Cline Teams for enterprise organization management and compliance, plus CLI and SDK variants, and runs a $1M open-source grant program announced in January 2026. Cline user traffic is the largest on the Vercel AI Gateway, and engineers at Samsung, SAP, and Salesforce are cited as enterprise users.
