Mexican payments fintech Clip launched consumer wallet Mi Clip with Ant International, raising US$500M to digitize the country's cash economy.
Clip
What the business is
Clip is Mexico's largest merchant-payments company — card terminals, Tap to Pay, restaurant software and SME credit — and with Mi Clip it adds a consumer digital wallet connected to its merchant network.
Starting capital:US$500M raised June 2026 at a valuation above US$2.5B (round pending regulatory approval), after a US$100M Morgan Stanley Tactical Value round in June 2024 and a US$250M SoftBank-led round in 2021 that made Clip a unicorn.
How it started
Adolfo Babatz founded Clip in Mexico in 2012 to help cash-dependent merchants accept cards, growing into the country's leading payments fintech: a US$250M SoftBank-led round in 2021 made it a unicorn, and a US$100M round in June 2024 held its valuation above US$2B. The company expanded into software, loans and business management tools and says its network now exceeds one million affiliated merchants.
What happened
On 9 June 2026 Clip launched Mi Clip, a consumer digital wallet built with Ant International's technology and backed by Mastercard and TelevisaUnivision, and disclosed a US$500M raise at a valuation above US$2.5B. The product combines digital cash loading, free money transfers to anyone (even unbanked recipients) and contactless payments on terminals worldwide, plus utility payments and rewards for digitizing cash. The wallet is operated through Swap, the payments company Clip acquired in 2020 and which obtained an electronic payments fund license (IFPE) in 2022, renamed Clip AI IFPE in May 2026.
No ending yet — it is still running.
Background
Clip is Mexico's largest merchant-payments company, founded in 2012 by Adolfo Babatz to help cash-dependent small merchants accept cards. It became a unicorn in 2021 through a US$250M SoftBank-led round, raised US$100M from Morgan Stanley Tactical Value in June 2024, and says more than one million merchants now use its network — one in three Mexican businesses that accept digital payments.
On 9 June 2026 Clip moved into consumer finance with Mi Clip, a digital wallet built with Ant International's technology and announced alongside Mastercard and TelevisaUnivision, funded by a US$500M raise at a valuation above US$2.5B. The wallet lets users load cash at 28,000 deposit points (planned to grow to 100,000), send money free to anyone including unbanked recipients, and pay contactless anywhere, with rewards for digitalizing cash.
Babatz framed the target explicitly as cash users, not banked consumers: about 85% of small purchases in Mexico are still paid in cash and roughly 40% of adults remain outside the formal financial system, per Mexico's 2024 financial-inclusion survey. The bet is that Clip's merchant footprint — where cash already flows — becomes the distribution network that makes the wallet the bridge between Mexico's cash economy and digital financial services.
What has to be true
- Clip already owns the merchant side of the cash economy, giving Mi Clip a distribution and cash-in network competitors would have to build from scratch.
- The wallet targets the ~40% of Mexican adults outside the formal banking system and the ~85% of small purchases still made in cash.
- Ant International's Alipay-proven technology reduces the risk of building consumer wallet rails from zero.
- A US$500M round at a US$2.5B+ valuation funds the cash-point expansion to 100,000 locations without forcing an IPO.
- Offering transfers, bill payments and rewards inside one app aims to make digital money the default rather than an alternative.
What can be applied
In a cash-heavy market, digitize cash rather than add another card: whoever controls where cash already flows controls the on-ramp to financial services.
Aftermath
As of 10 June 2026 Mi Clip was live through Clip's licensed electronic-payments entity (Clip AI IFPE), with 28,000 cash-in points and a stated plan to reach 100,000 by integrating Clip's merchant network. The US$500M raise was still subject to regulatory approval and investor names were not disclosed. Clip also highlighted adjacent bets around the launch — Tap to Pay (50,000 merchants in four months), restaurant software Wansoft and internal AI tooling — signaling it is expanding from merchant acquiring toward a full consumer and merchant financial platform.
