CodeWisp bets prompts can replace game engines; 17K games, YC W26

YC W26's browser studio turns plain-English prompts into playable web games; 2,000+ weekly creators, 17,000+ games.

The betAI prompts can collapse the distance between idea and playable game — generate, edit and publish in one browser — opening game creation to millions of non-developers.Live

What the business is

A browser-based AI game studio: describe a game in plain English, get a playable 2D, 3D or multiplayer web game, refine it with follow-up prompts, and share it with a link.

Starting capital$500K convertible note with Y Combinator listed as investor (reported by Founderland citing CB Insights, Feb 2026).

How it started

Elvin Fu, a lifelong game maker who created mobile and web games played by millions and built two engines from scratch, founded CodeWisp in San Francisco in 2025. His premise: engines and asset pipelines are designed for professional studios, which locks out the casual creators who most want to make games. The company joined YC's Winter 2026 batch with a three-person team.

What happened

CodeWisp launched publicly in March 2026 and was picked up in YC W26 Demo Day roundups. By the 2026-08-21 Launch YC post it reported 2,000+ weekly active game creators and 17,000+ games created on the platform, spanning 2D, 3D and multiplayer browser titles, with reported funding of $500K through a convertible note and YC as investor.

How it ended up

Still live and growing: 17,000+ community games as of August 2026, with the team positioning the platform's homepage as a distribution layer — 'the YouTube of games' — for AI-generated titles.

Background

CodeWisp is a browser-based AI game studio: users describe a game in plain English and the platform generates code, structure and assets, then lets them refine mechanics, enemies, physics, levels and visuals with follow-up prompts. Two parts — a no-install editor and a community homepage where every game opens, plays and shares via a link — make publishing as easy as posting.

Founder Elvin Fu had made games since age 10, shipped mobile and web games played by millions, built two game engines and taught game development to 22M+ people on YouTube before starting CodeWisp in 2025 and joining YC W26. His bet is that AI turns game creation into the next vibe coding: millions of non-developers will create, not just play.

Publicly launched in March 2026, CodeWisp reported on its Launch YC post of 2026-08-21 that 2,000+ creators were publishing weekly and 17,000+ games had been created, covering 2D, 3D and multiplayer browser titles. The company disclosed no revenue, but reported a $500K convertible note with YC as investor and is betting the community homepage becomes the distribution layer for AI-generated games.

What has to be true

  • Traditional engines require code, assets and pipelines, so casual creators have no on-ramp; prompt-to-game removes all three at once.
  • The founder's 22M-person YouTube teaching audience is a proven demand signal and a built-in distribution channel for launch.
  • Browser-only creation plus instant sharing creates a feed-like library effect — the platform's own content loop makes it more useful as more games are published.
  • The gaming market is projected near $300B by 2029 (PwC), and if even a fraction of players become creators the addressable base is millions, not thousands.

What can be applied

If incumbents serve pros, find the audience they ignore: a founder's 22M-follower teaching channel gave a prompt-to-game tool its distribution, turning it into a 17K-game community.

Aftermath

As of September 2026 CodeWisp is a three-person, YC W26-backed startup with a live browser studio and community: 2,000+ weekly active creators and 17,000+ published games per its August 2026 Launch YC post. No revenue has been disclosed; the open question is whether casual creators and branded 'playable commerce' projects convert into paying users before engine giants ship equivalent features.
