What the business is
ComfortDelGro is a Singapore transport operator whose consumer touchpoint is its taxi-booking app.
The bet
One app carrying taxi booking, lifestyle services and EV-charger lookup can keep ComfortDelGro's customers on its own platform against Grab-style super-apps.
How it started
ComfortDelGro launched Zig in 2021 as a foray into lifestyle mobility: navigation, taxi bookings, restaurant reservations and staycations in one app, aimed squarely at Grab's suite of services.
What happened
Zig never caught on — it shut down in March 2022 after less than a year, and its signup numbers were never disclosed. On April 20, 2022 the company merged the taxi app and Zig into CDG Zig: taxis plus restaurant tables, plus a map of EV chargers from its ComfortDelGro Engie joint venture. Jackson Chia, CEO of the private mobility group, called the merge 'a step forward' toward a 'unified digital platform'.
What has to be true
Ride-hailing giants like Grab were pulling customers off taxi operators' own apps; ComfortDelGro chose to fight for the customer relationship with a super-app of its own.
Zig's standalone lifestyle bet failed within a year; merging it into the working taxi app salvages the investment without restarting from zero.
The EV-charger finder ties the app to the ComfortDelGro Engie joint venture, extending the platform into charging infrastructure.
What can be applied
Folding a flopped side-app into the core app recycles the experiment instead of writing it off — but a super-app stuffed with features risks the simplicity that made the core app work.
Aftermath
CDG Zig went live on April 20, 2022. Zig users were told to redeem their Zig coins for ride vouchers; existing ComfortDelGro app users only had to update in place, keeping their promotional codes and stored payment details. The company said car rental, driving-lesson booking, private bus hire and medical transport could follow on the platform. NUS business lecturer Lawrence Loh backed the one-stop logic but warned the app 'must not be made too complicated' — customers may just want a fast taxi-booking interface, not an avalanche of features.
