How it started
Ty Dunn and Nate Sesti founded Continue in June 2023 after YC Summer 2023, positioning it as 'the leading open-source AI code assistant' against black-box copilots. The product connected to any model and any context (Jira, Confluence), and early development customers included Ionos, Siemens and Morningstar.
What happened
On 2025-02-26 Continue shipped version 1.0 plus a $3M seed led by Heavybit, and launched a hub for sharing custom assistants, with launch blocks from Mistral, Anthropic and Ollama. GitHub stars grew from 23k in February 2025 to roughly 34k by mid-2026 while the team stayed around five people, using open source as distribution to keep costs minimal.
How it ended up
Around 2026-06-16 Cursor (Anysphere) acqui-hired Continue: the final release v2.0.0-vscode shipped June 19, the repository was set read-only, and cloud data was deleted after July 15. Terms were undisclosed; the same week SpaceX agreed to acquire Cursor itself for $60B.
Background
Continue is an open-source AI coding assistant that runs inside VS Code and JetBrains, offering chat, autocomplete, edit and agent mode with one of the broadest model-provider lists in the ecosystem. It was bring-your-own-key from the start: developers pointed it at any model — Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, or local Ollama — and paid the model provider directly, with no subscription to the tool itself.
Founded in June 2023 by Ty Dunn and Nate Sesti after YC Summer 2023, the company pitched itself as 'the leading open-source AI code assistant' and the antithesis of proprietary black-box copilots. It raised about $5.1M total — $2.1M post-YC and a $3M Heavybit-led SAFE announced with version 1.0 in February 2025 — and grew to around 23,000 GitHub stars by then and roughly 34,000 by mid-2026, with frequent appearances on GitHub trending.
Around June 16, 2026, Cursor (Anysphere) quietly acqui-hired the team: the final release shipped June 19, the repository went read-only, and Continue's cloud data was deleted after July 15. Deal terms were not disclosed. The same week, SpaceX announced it would acquire Cursor itself for $60B in an all-stock deal, so Continue's open-source code now sits inside a chain that ends at a paid subscription IDE — the very product category it was built as an alternative to.

As of 2026-09-02 Continue is retired as a standalone product: the continuedev/continue repository is read-only under Apache-2.0 (35.7k stars, global rank ~#878), so anyone can fork it, but no further updates will ship and provider API changes will eventually break community forks. The hosted hub and cloud data are gone after the July 15, 2026 deletion deadline, and the team now works at Cursor, which was itself being acquired by SpaceX for $60B in a deal expected to close in Q3 2026.
