What the business is
AI code editor and coding-agent platform, sold per-seat to developers and enterprises.
The bet
That the moat in AI coding is the agent ecosystem, not the model: plugins bundling MCP, skills and subagents would lock in developers before rivals did.
How it started
Anysphere, founded in 2022, rode the AI-coding wave to a multi-billion-ARR product. By early 2026 the editor itself was being commoditized by Claude Code, open-source agents and OEM deals, so Cursor moved to open an ecosystem layer on top.
What happened
On 2026-02-17 Cursor launched plugins and the Cursor Marketplace: bundles of MCP servers, skills, subagents, rules and hooks, with curated launch partners including Amplitude, AWS, Figma, Linear, Stripe, Cloudflare, Vercel, Databricks and Snowflake. The spec and official plugins went public in the cursor/plugins repo. In April 2026 SpaceX struck an unusual agreement: the right to buy Cursor for $60B or pay $10B for the partnership. On 2026-06-16 Reuters and BBC reported SpaceX exercising the buyout.
How it ended up
SpaceX agreed to acquire Anysphere for $60B in SpaceX shares, with completion targeted by the end of September 2026.
What has to be true
The editor was commoditizing: terminal agents and free open-source rivals eroded the reason to pay for an AI-flavored IDE, so defensibility had to come from somewhere new.
Plugins bundle the primitives (MCP, skills, subagents, rules, hooks) that make an agent adoptable inside a company's existing stack — the same lock-in play every platform business makes.
Named launch partners at launch day signaled that Cursor was courting enterprises, not hobbyists; Stripe, Adobe and Nvidia were already cited as customers.
To SpaceX, distribution to millions of professional engineers was worth more than to any software acquirer, which is why the price tag ran far past any private-market mark.
What can be applied
When models commoditize, the ecosystem is what sells. Cursor's plugin marketplace ran for two months before the exit — and it was ecosystem plus distribution, not ARR, that priced the deal at $60B.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-10 the $60B all-stock sale to SpaceX was on track to close by the end of September. The plugin marketplace was live with more than the original curated set (a follow-up post announced 30+ new plugins), the cursor/plugins repo remained among the fastest-growing on GitHub, and private team marketplaces with central governance were announced as next. Cursor kept operating as the AI-coding product inside SpaceX while the Colossus supercomputer was pointed at building models for it.
