A recommendation platform connecting cybersecurity buyers and sellers, making money from premium buyer subscriptions and seller fees

Bootstrapped — GeekWire reported the company with no outside funding

Vinay Narayan, previously a business strategy leader for Facebook's Oculus and Portal teams after three years at Google, moved to Seattle from Silicon Valley and co-founded Cypher with Sachin Goyal, former VP of engineering at Multiverse and director of engineering at FanDuel.

The software uses generative AI to understand a company's cybersecurity needs, then its recommendation algorithm offers a list of providers that fit. Cypher charges buyers premium subscriptions, including for more data points about sellers, and charges sellers that use the platform to find customers — so vendors cannot simply pay to play.

Buyers of all sizes face a maze of security products and aggressive sales tactics with no neutral way to compare them

Cheaper tools that provide adequate protection lose visibility to better-marketed rivals, per Narayan

Charging buyers subscriptions for seller data funds the platform without selling placement to the loudest vendor

Bootstrapping keeps the two-sided model independent of VC pressure to monetize placement

'We're going to level the playing field between the haves and have-nots': neutrality is the product, so under-marketed tools must be able to surface on merit.

As of June 2024 the startup was bootstrapped and generating revenue from buyer subscriptions and seller fees, operating from Seattle with its two founders in place.
