Dola's emerging-market AI bet: ByteDance's free assistant passes 200M downloads

Free and US-free, ByteDance's Dola became emerging markets' AI hit: 200M+ downloads, 72M in Q1 2026, ~12M March DAU, #3 AI app worldwide.

Dola (ByteDance)

The betThat a fully free assistant could win emerging markets first, skipping the US and Europe, and build a global downloads lead before Western rivals localized.Scaling

What the business is

Dola is ByteDance's free generative-AI assistant for markets outside China, built by the same Flow organization as Doubao. It launched in August 2023 as Cici, was renamed Dola in December 2025, and competes with ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude for everyday help and homework answers.

How it started

In August 2023 ByteDance's Flow organization, led by technical VP Hong Dingkun and model-team head Zhu Wenjia, launched Cici overseas. It deliberately skipped the US and Europe, where ChatGPT already owned user attention, and went quiet into Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East; by November 2023 it had topped Google Play's overall chart in Argentina and Peru.

What happened

The emerging-market lead built slowly, then broke open. Cici began showing real strength in August 2025, and by October its promotions were at full throttle: free positioning, math-homework messaging and TikTok creator tie-ins, with 400+ ad groups in Mexico alone before it took that country's Google Play chart. In December 2025 the app was renamed Dola and announced more than 10 million DAU, with 55.93 million MAU. Sensor Tower, reported by TMTPost in April 2026, then clocked Q1 downloads above 72 million (up 47% quarter over quarter), cumulative downloads past 200 million and March average DAU near 12 million. In Brazil the app went from outside the top 1,000 in 2025 to 13.85 million downloads in January-April 2026 and second place in April behind sibling TikTok (Mobile Time via AppMagic), while DataEye's April ranking put Dola third among native AI apps worldwide at 26.83 million downloads.

How it ended up

Still running and still free: as of mid-2026 Dola's emerging-market downloads crown is real, but the app charges users nothing and ByteDance has not entered the US, where ChatGPT and Google Gemini remain entrenched.

Background

Dola is ByteDance's free generative-AI assistant for markets outside China, launched in August 2023 as Cici by the company's Flow organization and renamed Dola in December 2025. The bet was contrarian: while ChatGPT and Google fought over American users, ByteDance skipped the US and Europe entirely and went after Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, where no AI assistant had yet established itself.

The product hook was deliberately unglamorous, free and good at solving math homework, pushed through TikTok creators and local ads. By November 2023 Cici had already topped Google Play's overall charts in Argentina and Peru; two years later the renamed Dola was promoting hard in Mexico, with more than 400 ad groups in October 2025 alone, before taking the country's Google Play download crown.

The numbers then compounded. Sensor Tower figures reported by TMTPost in April 2026 show Q1 downloads above 72 million, up 47% quarter over quarter, cumulative downloads past 200 million and average March DAU near 12 million. AppMagic data reported by Mobile Time put Dola at 13.85 million Brazil downloads in January-April 2026, when it had not even been in Brazil's top 1,000 a year earlier, and DataEye's April ranking placed it third among native AI apps worldwide at 26.83 million downloads, behind only ChatGPT (76.37M) and Gemini (41.89M).

The open questions are monetization and geography: Dola still charges users nothing, and ByteDance has not entered the US. The bet so far is that a downloads lead in unclaimed markets buys time to convert scale into revenue before Western rivals localize.

What has to be true

  • ChatGPT owned US awareness by 2023, so ByteDance contested markets where no AI assistant had a first-mover claim: Latin America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
  • Free plus a concrete hook like math homework matched real student needs, and TikTok gave Dola a distribution engine that money alone could not buy for rivals.
  • Sensor Tower counted 72M+ Q1-2026 downloads (+47% QoQ) and 200M+ cumulative with ~12M March DAU, growth on a scale that validated the market-first bet.
  • Brazil was the cleanest proof: outside the top 1,000 in 2025, Dola took 13.85M downloads in Jan-Apr 2026 and finished April second overall, behind sibling TikTok.

What can be applied

Go where the giants are not: launching free into emerging markets first made Dola the #3 downloaded AI app worldwide before OpenAI or Google could localize.

Aftermath

By mid-2026 Dola's crown was real but its outcome unwritten: 200M downloads and ~12M DAU with zero consumer revenue, and a stated path of converting scale into enterprise sales later. The US and Europe remain unentered, and Gemini is entrenched in emerging-market education and government. DataEye's April report placed Dola third worldwide at 26.83M monthly downloads in a month the native-AI market shrank 9.23%; the easy-download phase may be ending, and retention will decide whether the lead holds.
