Doubtnut ran a doubts-solving platform for students; Allen Career Institute is a Kota-based test-prep chain building a digital arm, Allen Digital.

Allen bet that bolting Doubtnut's doubt-solving tech and student base onto its test-prep curriculum would give it a technology-led learning business

About $50M raised in total before the sale; Peak XV-backed

Doubtnut, an Anushree Nagori-led edtech backed by Peak XV, built a doubts-solving platform for students and raised about $50 million in total. It had explored selling itself before: acquisition talks with Byju's collapsed over valuation differences.

Growth never became revenue: internal documents reviewed by Entrackr showed FY23 revenue of Rs 26.6 crore, and the company was described as struggling to make money. After Entrackr exclusively reported the takeover, Allen announced the acquisition on December 4, 2023; sources put it at a stress deal of about $10 million. Allen had been scaling Allen Digital with hires from Amazon, Google, Meta, Flipkart, Samsung and Twitter, and in May 2023 appointed Meta executive Abha Maheshwari as Allen Digital's CEO.

Acquired by Allen Career Institute in December 2023 in a deal sources pegged at about $10 million — roughly a fifth of the ~$50 million raised.

Doubtnut's doubt-solving product never became a business: Rs 26.6 crore of FY23 revenue against about $50 million raised.

A previous escape route had closed — acquisition talks with Byju's fell through over valuation differences.

For Allen, buying doubt-solving tech and its student base was cheaper and faster than building them inside Allen Digital.

Allen was already scaling its digital arm with big-tech hires and a Meta executive as CEO, and needed product-led learning to show for it.

A product students use daily is not a business: when monetization stays a fraction of the capital raised, the endgame is a stress sale to whoever can bolt your asset onto theirs.

Allen said Doubtnut's team would keep building the doubt-resolution experience for students of both Allen and Doubtnut, with Allen's curriculum and academic offerings brought to Doubtnut's student base. As of the December 4, 2023 announcement the companies did not disclose the price; sources pegged it at about $10 million.
