DramaWave: AI-made micro-dramas jump to #3 in overseas downloads

Kunlun's paid drama app made most new releases AI-generated in 2026, then hit 20M+ monthly downloads — #3 among overseas short-drama apps in July.

DramaWave (Skywork AI, Kunlun Tech)

The betThat AI-generated dramas can displace human-shot content in paid short-form video — collapsing production cost so supply, not paywalls, becomes the growth engine.Scaling

What the business is

DramaWave is Kunlun Tech's overseas short-drama app, launched in September 2024 alongside its free rival FreeReels. It sells subscriptions and per-episode unlocks of vertical dramas — romance, suspense, fantasy — mainly to users in the US and Europe, while Kunlun's Skywork AI unit and Tiangong models write, generate, localize and market the content.

How it started

DramaWave launched in September 2024 as Kunlun's paid answer to the market ReelShort had proven, while FreeReels attacked the free tier. It passed $240M in annualized revenue by Q2 2025, briefly topped Korea's Google Play entertainment chart in April 2025 above Netflix, and won a Google Play 2025 Top Trending award — early proof that a Chinese company could sell episodes to Western users, not just serve them ads.

What happened

In 2026 Kunlun turned DramaWave into its AI bet. The app added an AI comic-drama channel in March; on 2 July Kunlun announced that DramaWave had completed its AI-native transformation, with over 80% of new releases AI-generated in Q2, rising above 90% by July per its half-year report. DataEye measured 20M+ overseas downloads in July 2026, up 49% month on month — the fastest growth among the top five apps. Content lead Zhang Wei said viewers mostly do not care whether content is AI-made, and that AI raised the platform's output from roughly 20 human dramas a month to more than 200.

How it ended up

Still scaling as of 2026-09-02: DramaWave is the #3 overseas short-drama app by monthly downloads, and its parent's combined AI short-drama platforms lead the category by MAU with $700M+ ARR. The unresolved test is whether scale converts into profit: Kunlun's H1-2026 marketing spend reached RMB2.756B and its adjusted net loss was RMB458M, while industry download growth (+140% YoY in Q1 2026) far outpaced in-app purchase revenue growth (+20%).

Background

DramaWave is Kunlun Tech's overseas short-drama app, launched in September 2024 as the paid half of a two-app strategy — FreeReels monetized with ads in Southeast Asia and Latin America while DramaWave sold subscriptions and per-episode unlocks in richer markets like the US and Europe. Content is produced with Kunlun's own models, from script and storyboard to video, dubbing and ad creative.

The 2026 bet was that AI could replace human-shot content at scale. Kunlun added an AI comic-drama channel in March 2026, and on 2 July announced DramaWave's AI-native transformation was complete, with over 80% of new releases AI-generated in Q2 and more than 90% by July per its half-year report. Content lead Zhang Wei said output had grown from roughly 20 human dramas a month to more than 200 AI titles, and that most viewers do not care how a show was made.

The downloads followed. DataEye counted 20M+ overseas downloads for DramaWave in July 2026, up 49% month on month and the fastest growth among the top five short-drama apps, putting it third behind NetShort (23M+) and ReelShort (22M+) in a month when the whole category hit about 284M downloads and $273M in in-app purchase revenue.

The money side is more complicated. Kunlun reported $700M+ ARR for its AI short-drama platform business in Q2 2026, over $65M monthly revenue by end-June and H1-2026 AI short-drama revenue of RMB1.535B (+163% YoY, 28.63% of group revenue) at a 67.49% gross margin — yet group adjusted net loss was still RMB458M, with marketing spend of RMB2.756B and channel fees rising faster than revenue.

What has to be true

  • Supply became the growth engine: raising monthly output from ~20 to 200+ titles let DramaWave grow downloads 49% month on month while the paid leaders grew 21–25%.
  • Paid positioning paid off in rich markets: subscriptions and per-episode unlocks in the US and Europe made DramaWave the profitable-half bet alongside ad-supported FreeReels.
  • Owning the model stack keeps one cost curve: the same Skywork models generate, localize and market the shows, so rivals licensing third-party content cannot match the ramp.
  • Scale is still being bought: with marketing and channel costs climbing faster than revenue and industry IAP growth lagging download growth, the AI content lead has not yet become profit.

What can be applied

Build the factory, not just the paywall: AI production cut DramaWave's episode costs and took it to 20M downloads a month — but heavy marketing spend still keeps its parent unprofitable.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 DramaWave is the #3 overseas short-drama app by monthly downloads (20M+ in July 2026), and Kunlun's combined AI short-drama platforms lead the category by MAU with $700M+ ARR and about $65M in monthly revenue. The open question is profitability: gross margin was 67.49% in H1, but the group spent RMB2.756B on marketing and still lost RMB458M (adjusted) as channel and content costs outgrew revenue. Whether AI keeps cutting production costs faster than acquisition prices rise decides if the download lead becomes a durable business.
