How it started

Mario Zechner, creator of the libGDX game framework, started Pi in August 2025 after Claude Code's changing system prompts and hidden context injection broke his trust in vendor harnesses. He deliberately excluded MCP, subagents and plan mode. Pi's visibility exploded in January 2026 when OpenClaw went viral using Pi as its coding agent, and Ronacher endorsed it as 'the minimal agent within OpenClaw'.

What happened

OpenClaw's success brought Zechner term sheets and job offers, but he chose to join Earendil instead of founding his own company, citing RoboVM — an open-source project closed after acquisition and later killed by Microsoft. On 2026-04-08 Earendil announced the acquisition: Zechner became a major stakeholder with control of technical direction, the repository moved to earendil-works/pi, and RFC 0015 committed the core to MIT licensing while reserving Fair Source and proprietary layers for hosted features. The same day, Lefos entered public alpha.

How it ended up

The bet is still running. Pi passed about 85,000 GitHub stars by August 2026, MiniMax rebuilt MiniMax Code 2.0 on it, and Databricks' July 2026 benchmark reported that simple harnesses like Pi performed best on its internal codebase. Whether the open-core model — MIT core, paid hosted layers — turns adoption into revenue remains the open question.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-04 Earendil is live: Pi passed about 85,000 GitHub stars by 8 Aug 2026, MiniMax launched Code 2.0 rebuilt on Pi, and Databricks' benchmark plus Earendil's August post drew 500+ points on Hacker News. Lefos remains in public alpha. The open question is the open-core trade: RFC 0015 keeps the core MIT but reserves Fair Source and proprietary hosted features, and commentators ask whether monetization will slowly pull capability out of the open core. For now the minimal-harness bet has real adoption and an intact community, with commercial proof still pending.
