What the business is
EcoFlow, founded in 2017, makes portable power stations and home energy systems; its PowerStream line is a modular balcony solar system — panels, microinverter and battery storage that plugs into a home socket.
The bet
That renters and DIY buyers would adopt plug-in balcony solar with battery storage as a mass category once limits rose to 800W.
Starting capital
No new raise was tied to the launch — EcoFlow entered the category from its portable-power business.
How it started
EcoFlow launched PowerStream in Germany in May 2023, betting balcony solar would move from hobbyist niche to mainstream as the country prepared to raise plug-in feed-in limits — installs had already tripled in 2023 before the law even passed, and portable-power brands had the direct-to-consumer marketing muscle to win renters.
What happened
Germany passed Solarpaket I in May 2024: inverter feed-in limits rose from 600W to 800W, module capacity up to 2kW, registration with BNetzA was simplified and tenant rights to install were strengthened. Registrations surged — 140,000 in Q3 2024 alone — and 36Kr put the market's year-on-year growth at about 3x. EcoFlow's storage-equipped share of its German balcony sales doubled from 20% in 2023 to 40% in 2025, while Anker (SOLIX) and Jackery piled into the same channel.
How it ended up
Still scaling as of June 2025: German registrations passed one million balcony systems, EcoFlow's regional product manager described demand as exponential with buyers shifting from tech enthusiasts to ordinary households, and EcoFlow added the modular STREAM system with up to 2,300W of bypass power for appliances.
What has to be true
The regulatory direction was knowable before the date: Germany's coalition had committed to easing balcony-solar rules, so EcoFlow could ship a product for the 800W regime in advance.
Portable-power brands already owned the direct-to-consumer channel that renters shop in, unlike rooftop solar installers built around homeowners and permits.
Bundling storage raised average order value and differentiated EcoFlow from panel-only kits as customers realized the battery let them use the power in the evening.
The law's tenant-rights provisions turned millions of apartment dwellers into addressable buyers — the segment only plug-in systems could reach.
What can be applied
When a rule change's direction is clear but its date is not, build early: EcoFlow shipped for the 800W market pre-law and turned that head start into attach-rate leadership.
Aftermath
As of June 2025 Germany's registered balcony-solar systems have passed one million and the category is mainstreaming: EcoFlow reports 40% of its German buyers are homeowners, its storage attach rate doubled from 20% in 2023 to 40% in 2025, and it has added the modular STREAM system with up to 2,300W of bypass power for large appliances. Competitors Anker and Jackery entered the same market, and 36Kr cautioned that the segment could repeat home-storage's red-ocean cycle as Chinese inverter and storage makers pile in, pressuring margins for everyone who only rides the regulatory wave.
