FlowGPT bets paid ads can top charts with Emochi: #1 Vietnam, then #1 global AI-social
FlowGPT turned a prompt community into Emochi, an AI roleplay app that topped Vietnam's charts in May 2025 and hit #1 global AI-social downloads by 2026.

What the business is
FlowGPT runs Emochi (Emochi: Unlimited Chat with AI), an AI roleplay chat app where users create or pick characters and talk across up to eight selectable chat models; free to download, monetized through in-app purchases and subscriptions.
Starting capital:$10M Pre-A led by Goodwater Capital with DCM Ventures, Feb 2024 (plus DCM seed, May 2023); 4M+ MAU on the FlowGPT community by early 2024.
How it started
FlowGPT was founded in late 2022 by Dang Jiacheng (Jay), then a UC Berkeley student, and Lifan Wang, a former Amazon engineering manager. After ChatGPT launched, Dang noticed users sharing prompts on social media, built the FlowGPT site prototype in three days in January 2023, and drew tens of thousands of signups within a week. DCM invested a seed round in May 2023, and by February 2024 the community claimed over 4 million monthly active users, with a $10M Pre-A led by Goodwater Capital.
What happened
Emochi launched globally in January 2024 as FlowGPT's consumer AI roleplay app. In May 2025 it topped Vietnam's iOS and Google Play entertainment free charts and became the fastest-growing AI-social product: ~3.79M MAU (up 109% MoM), downloads up 47% MoM, and over a million monthly downloads — one of only four AI-social apps at that scale besides Character.ai, Talkie and PolyBuzz. Growth was bought: 7,000+ Android ad creatives in 90 days (广大大 data) and an Apple Search Ads push on competitor keywords in late May; product differentiation was eight chat models with tiered pricing.
How it ended up
By May 2026 Emochi had climbed to No. 1 among global AI-social apps by downloads and No. 2 by revenue (revenue +75.55% MoM), with downloads spread across Mexico (11.4%), Brazil (10.5%) and the US (8.9%) and 78.6% of ad spend on AppLovin — a paid-acquisition engine that kept the app on top of the category.
Background
FlowGPT was founded in late 2022 by Dang Jiacheng (Jay), then a UC Berkeley student, and Lifan Wang, a former Amazon engineering manager, as an open community for sharing AI prompts — an 'AI Product Hunt' where users ranked prompts, chatted with AI programs and built small apps. The prototype took three days to build in January 2023 and drew tens of thousands of users in its first week.
DCM Ventures led a seed round in May 2023, and by February 2024 the community had over 4 million monthly active users and a $10M Pre-A led by Goodwater Capital. The community's own rankings showed roleplay and character prompts among the most popular uses, which pointed FlowGPT toward a consumer app: Emochi, an AI roleplay chat app, launched globally in January 2024 with up to eight selectable chat models.
Emochi's breakout came in May 2025, when it topped Vietnam's iOS and Google Play entertainment free charts and became the fastest-growing AI-social product: MAU of about 3.79M (up 109% month-over-month), downloads up 47%, and more than one million monthly downloads — one of only four AI-social apps at that level. The growth was paid for: over 7,000 Android ad creatives in 90 days and an Apple Search Ads push on competitor keywords.
By May 2026 the model had scaled globally: Insightrackr ranked Emochi No. 1 among AI-social apps by downloads and No. 2 by revenue, with about 78.6% of ad spend on AppLovin and users concentrated in Mexico, Brazil and the US. FlowGPT's bet — that a prompt community could seed a paid consumer app and that performance ads could keep it on top of the charts — was still paying off.
What has to be true
- FlowGPT let its own community data decide the product: roleplay and character prompts dominated its rankings, so Emochi shipped exactly that category rather than a general assistant.
- The team treated user acquisition as a science: thousands of ad creatives, AppLovin-heavy programmatic spend, and Apple Search Ads on rival keywords manufactured the Vietnam chart peak within weeks.
- Eight chat models with tiered pricing gave Emochi a monetization edge over single-model rivals, converting the downloaded audience into paying users across roleplay styles.
- Choosing emerging markets first — Vietnam in 2025, then Brazil and Mexico — let a smaller team win store charts where competition was thinner before challenging the US.
What can be applied
Paid acquisition can manufacture chart wins: Emochi bought #1 in Vietnam with 7,000+ ad creatives, proving distribution can be purchased — the moat is whether users stay and pay after spend stops.
Aftermath
As of June 16, 2026, Emochi ranked No. 1 among AI-social apps globally by downloads and No. 2 by revenue (Insightrackr), with month-over-month revenue growth of 75.55%. Its user base had shifted from Vietnam to a Latin America-heavy mix (Mexico 11.4% and Brazil 10.5% of downloads, Brazil leading revenue), sustained by roughly 78.6% of ad spend on AppLovin. FlowGPT kept running the original prompt community alongside the app, while AI-roleplay rivals such as ByteDance AnyDoor and Linky AI faced app-store removals during the same period.
