What the business is
Fleet is a French device-as-a-service startup: companies lease MacBooks and other equipment instead of buying.
Starting capital
Bootstrapped — no outside funding; revenue reinvested. Device financing comes from seven financial partners, so Fleet carries no credit risk.
How it started
Fleet started with one product: rent a fleet of MacBooks instead of buying them. Co-founder and CEO Alexandre Berriche designed it lean — no warehouse, no big bank credit line; client orders route automatically to one of seven French financing partners via APIs, with pricing on the site reflecting customer risk, order size and supplier.
What happened
By April 2023 Fleet had deployed nearly 10,000 devices over four years without raising outside funding. It added smartphones, tablets, accessories, phone booths and furniture; launched a donation program with nonprofits for devices coming off three-year leases (including laptops not leased through Fleet); partnered with Evy on insurance products; and planned mobile device management features to locate and remotely lock devices. 'I'm really inspired by this U.S. company called Rippling', Berriche said. 'We're building the operating system for the workplace.'
What has to be true
The financing model carries no inventory or credit risk, so growth needs no capital — Fleet automated seven lenders' APIs instead.
Three-year lease ends created a natural second product: refresh cycles, then donation of used devices through nonprofits.
The expansion follows the Rippling playbook: rebundle unbundled services — insurance with Evy, MDM next — into one workplace 'operating system'.
Even lease-backs serve customers' runway problems, deepening the relationship without new hardware.
What can be applied
Distribution-first expansion: a bootstrapped company that owns the customer relationship for laptops can keep attaching services — insurance, MDM, furniture — without raising a cent.
Aftermath
As of April 16, 2023, Fleet had deployed nearly 10,000 devices, remained bootstrapped, and was rolling out its expanded catalog, donation program, Evy insurance partnership and planned MDM features across a customer base starting to reach first refresh cycles.
