A macOS AI speech coach that records and transcribes a user's side of real calls (e.g. Zoom), then gives feedback on spoken English, plus practice with AI coaches.

Near-native English speakers, not beginners, will pay $25/month for an AI coach that fixes pronunciation, grammar and pace by listening to their real calls.

$2M seed (Pioneer Fund, SID Venture Partners, angels), closed before YC W24 Demo Day

Stan Beliaev and Yurii Rebryk, former university roommates with ML backgrounds and internships at Amazon, Google and Nvidia, built Fluently out of their own experience as near-native speakers who still wanted to improve. They got into Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch.

Before YC Demo Day, Fluently closed a $2M seed round with Pioneer Fund, SID Venture Partners and angels. The beta ran macOS-only, leaning on Apple Silicon to process audio locally for privacy, with a Chrome extension waitlist. The team of four included three engineers.

Still running: two Product Hunt #1-day launches (March 2025 and the 'Accent Guru' launch of November 2025, also #1 of the week) show continued shipping and audience growth.

Near-native speakers were underserved: plenty of apps teach English, few coach people who already work in it.

Listening to real calls gives feedback on actual speech, not scripted exercises — a data moat competitors lack.

A viral low-friction hook ('What accent do you have? I will tell in 30s') turned a coaching product into a shareable test.

Technical founding team and YC W24 backing made a pre-Demo-Day $2M seed possible.

Pick the underserved edge of a crowded market: coaching near-native speakers on real calls dodged the beginner-app wars and gave a four-person team a fundable wedge.

As of September 2026 Fluently is live and shipping: after the March 2025 PH #1 day it launched 'Accent Guru' in November 2025, taking #1 of the day and the week, and continues to sell its coaching subscription from a $25/month starting point.
