What the business is
Foundation builds advanced humanoid robots meant to operate in complex environments and address the labor shortage.
The bet
Real-world foundation models need training data nobody has collected — the company that deploys the largest humanoid fleet wins, in software and hardware alike.
Starting capital
$11M pre-seed from Tribe Capital and angels; Tribe co-founder and managing director Arjun Sethi is also a co-founder of Foundation.
How it started
Sankaet Pathak founded Synapse, a banking-as-a-service startup, in 2014 and ran it until May 2024; within months he co-founded Foundation with Tribe Capital's Arjun Sethi.
What happened
Synapse had raised just over $50M including a 2019 $33M Series B led by a16z's Angela Strange, wobbled in 2023 with layoffs, and filed Chapter 11 in April 2024 with millions of end users unable to reach nearly $160M in deposits. Pathak blames former partner Evolve Bank for the shortfalls and is publishing them publicly; Evolve has previously denied responsibility and blamed Synapse. In June The Information reported $10M in Foundation commitments; by August Pathak said $11M was raised and posted the near-term goal of a walking humanoid robot by year-end.
What has to be true
The largest-fleet-wins thesis turns robotics into a land grab: whoever deploys the most humanoids first owns the training data no one else has.
Investors backed a founder whose previous company left customers' money frozen — the $11M pre-seed is a verdict on the new bet, not the old one.
Claiming a perception stack beyond any autonomous-vehicle stack is the wedge that makes a year-end walking humanoid sound plausible.
What can be applied
Founders can raise again while their last company's users are still short millions — the pitch that wins the next round is a data-moat theory, not an accounting of the last one.
Aftermath
As of 22 August 2024, Foundation had $11M in pre-seed commitments, a year-end target for a walking humanoid, and no product deployed. Synapse's Chapter 11 and the dispute over deposit shortfalls with Evolve Bank remained unresolved.
