Background

GalaxEye is a Bengaluru space startup betting that fusing two imaging technologies in one small satellite will open a commercial market for all-weather Earth observation. Founded in 2021 by five IIT Madras alumni led by Suyash Singh, it spent roughly five years developing an OptoSAR satellite that combines electro-optical and synthetic aperture radar sensors on a single platform.

The company validated its approach stepwise: DroneSAR in 2022 (2 km altitude), the world's first HAPS SAR at 20 km, then an in-orbit payload test aboard ISRO's POEM mission in 2024. It raised about $20M from Infosys, ideaForge, Zerodha's Rainmatter and Speciale Invest, and partnered with NSIL, ISRO's commercial arm, to distribute imagery globally.

On May 3, 2026, Mission Drishti launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg, California — a 190 kg satellite that is India's largest privately built Earth observation platform and, per ISRO, the world's first OptoSAR satellite. ISRO and Prime Minister Modi publicly congratulated the launch.

GalaxEye now faces its real test: converting all-weather, day-night imaging into revenue. Initial imagery is due within weeks of commissioning, early demand is expected mostly from defence and security agencies, and the company plans a constellation of at least 10 satellites over the next two-and-a-half years.

What has to be true

  • The bet was that buyers need both optical and radar data, so a fused platform beats buying two separate satellites and gives a young startup a differentiated wedge.
  • Stage-gating the hardware on drones and hosted payloads kept development costs survivable before the flagship build.
  • Early revenue is deliberately anchored to defence and government demand, which is reliable but also makes the commercial-market thesis unproven.
  • A domestic partner (NSIL) for distribution and testing infrastructure gave it credibility that pure private players lacked.

Aftermath

As of September 2026 GalaxEye is in the commercialization phase: the Drishti satellite is being commissioned in orbit, first customer imagery is expected within weeks, and early revenue is projected to come mostly from defence and security agencies. The company plans to launch a constellation of at least ten satellites over the next two-and-a-half years, with funding of about $20M already raised from Infosys, ideaForge, Rainmatter and others. No further funding round or customer contracts have been publicly disclosed since the launch.
