H Company's agentic-AI bet: $220M seed, DeepMind founders, then a Palantir CEO

Paris startup H raised a $220M seed for 'frontier action models' before any product; three DeepMind co-founders quit, and ex-Palantir's Gautier Cloix took over.

What the business is

H builds agentic AI: foundation models and agents designed to automate multi-step digital tasks for enterprises, sold as Runner H and specialist agents rather than a chat product.

Starting capital$220M seed announced May 2024, with roughly 40% equity and the rest convertible per an earlier Bloomberg report; investors included Accel, Amazon, Samsung, UiPath and billionaires such as Eric Schmidt and Xavier Niel.

How it started

H launched in Paris in early 2024, months before any product, originally under the name Holistic AI. Charles Kantor, a Stanford researcher, co-founded it with four Google DeepMind alumni: Karl Tuyls, Laurent Sifre, Daan Wierstra and Julien Perolat. In May 2024 the startup announced a $220M seed to fund compute, datasets and a 25-person research team chasing 'frontier action models' and, in Kantor's framing, AGI.

What happened

Three months after the round, in August 2024, three of the five co-founders — Tuyls, Wierstra and Perolat — left citing 'operational differences', before any public product. Runner H, a generalist agent aimed at enterprise work, reached beta in November 2024, and a wider suite (Runner H 2.0, Surfer H, Tester H) followed in June 2025. On 2025-06-13 H replaced CEO Charles Kantor with Gautier Cloix, who spent a decade at Palantir and led its French business; Cloix moved the company toward Palantir-style 'forward-deployed' enterprise delivery, with Laurent Sifre staying as CTO.

How it ended up

As of mid-June 2025 the bet is unresolved but the company is still running: H remains independent under new CEO Gautier Cloix with agents on the market, Sifre as the last of the five original co-founders in an operating role, and Kantor remaining a shareholder rather than CEO.

Background

H is a Paris-based AI startup founded in early 2024 by Stanford researcher Charles Kantor and four Google DeepMind alumni: Karl Tuyls, Laurent Sifre, Daan Wierstra and Julien Perolat. Its bet, made public in May 2024 with a $220M seed round, was that the next AI platform would not be another chatbot but an 'action model' that plans and executes multi-step digital work for knowledge workers.

The seed — reported by TechCrunch, Bloomberg and Sifted as one of the largest ever raised in France — was struck before any product shipped. Around 40% was equity and the rest convertible per Bloomberg, with investors including Accel, Amazon, Samsung, UiPath and billionaires such as Eric Schmidt and Xavier Niel. H assembled 25 engineers and scientists around the thesis and set its ambition, in Kantor's words, on 'frontier action models to boost the productivity of workers'.

The founding team fractured fast: in August 2024, three months after the round, Tuyls, Wierstra and Perolat left citing 'operational differences' — before a public product existed. H shipped Runner H, a generalist enterprise agent, in beta in November 2024, and followed with a suite of agents (Runner H 2.0, Surfer H, Tester H) in June 2025.

On 13 June 2025 H replaced Kantor as CEO with Gautier Cloix, a decade-long Palantir veteran who had run its French business. Cloix pivoted the company toward forward-deployed enterprise delivery — selling agents into customer workflows the way Palantir deploys engineers — leaving Laurent Sifre as the last original co-founder in an operating role and Kantor as a shareholder.

What has to be true

  • H bet on capability rather than conversation: if LLMs plateau at chat, the value moves to agents that act across software, a position frontier labs were slow to claim.
  • The record seed converted research pedigree into an immediate talent and compute advantage — 25 hires before product-market fit is only possible with a round that size.
  • European AI had produced Mistral but no agentic frontier player; H's DeepMind-heavy Paris team made it a sovereignty-adjacent bet investors like Amazon, Samsung and UiPath wanted exposure to.
  • The governance story shows the risk of five-way co-founder structures: within a year only one founder remained operational, and H had to import enterprise-selling DNA from Palantir.

What can be applied

A record seed raised on pedigree is a loan against execution: money buys time, not alignment — and enterprise agents still need sellers, not just researchers.

Aftermath

As of 13 June 2025 H Company was still running independently under CEO Gautier Cloix, with Runner H and the June 2025 agent suite on the market and Laurent Sifre as CTO. Charles Kantor remained a shareholder after stepping down. The open question was whether an agentic-AI startup built on a record seed and a fractured founding team could convert research into enterprise revenue — the exact problem Cloix's Palantir-style deployment model was meant to solve.
