HeyGen's HyperFrames bet: HTML as the video format for AI agents

HeyGen is an AI avatar video platform — generate, localize and personalize studio-quality video from a script in 170+ languages; HyperFrames is its open-source framework that renders HTML, CSS and animations into deterministic MP4 video.

That agents, not human editors, will produce most business video — so HeyGen open-sourced an HTML-to-MP4 engine and bet deterministic rendering wins adoption.

HeyGen raised a $60M Series A led by Benchmark (June 2024) at a $500M+ valuation, after ARR grew from $1M to $35M+ in just over a year.

By 2026-06-30 the repo had 32.2K stars (32.2x Q2 growth, ROSS Index), with tldraw and TanStack listed as adopters and HeyGen publishing its own launch videos as open HyperFrames compositions.

Still running: HyperFrames is live under Apache 2.0, used in production at HeyGen, and expanding with agent skills, AWS Lambda rendering and a browser studio, while HeyGen's commercial avatar-video business continues.

HTML is a format every LLM and web agent already writes and parses, so the integration cost for agents is near zero.

Deterministic rendering makes video safe for CI/CD-style automated pipelines, a pattern content teams need at scale.

Open source with no per-render fees removed the fear of lock-in and turned developers into the distribution channel.
