What the business is
Super app consolidating food delivery, ride-hailing, cash-on-delivery logistics, and a marketplace for small businesses across Central America
The bet
A local super app combining food, rides, cash delivery, and a marketplace could win by fitting the region's cash economy and informal labor better than global giants
Starting capital
$115,000 friends-and-family (2017); $13.6M total raised through Series A (2020)
How it started
Argumedo returned from New York (where he worked with Uber co-founder Oscar Salazar) to San Salvador in 2017, moved into his parents' home, and with tennis partner Ricardo Cuellar raised $115k from friends and family to launch HugoApp in six months
What happened
Within three months Hugo became the local delivery leader, beating 15-year incumbent Gourmet Express and Uber (which launched same year). Aggressive marketing, elite institutional ties, and marginally better driver/user rates ($2/ride flat) drove loyalty. COVID lockdowns (strict, militarized) exploded demand: 280% growth in 2020, 1M+ requests/month. Expanded to Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Jamaica
How it ended up
Dominant regional super app; expanding into fintech (remittances via Visa/Banco LAFISE tapping $5.9B yearly US–Salvador corridor) and UN/IOM partnership hiring deported/returned migrants as drivers and coders
What has to be true
Cash-on-delivery solved the trust/payment gap in a 71% unbanked region
Local elite networks and aggressive marketing created a moat Uber couldn't cross
Driver economics ($2/ride) were marginally better but meaningful near the poverty line
COVID lockdowns turned a nice-to-have into a lifeline, locking in habit formation
Stacking fintech on logistics captures the $5.9B remittance flow naturally
What can be applied
In overlooked markets, fitting the local informal economy (cash, gig labor, elite networks) beats global playbooks that assume card payments and formal employment
Aftermath
As of May 2021, HugoApp operates in seven Central American/Caribbean countries, processes 1M+ monthly requests, and is pivoting to a fintech super app via Visa/Banco LAFISE remittance partnership and IOM migrant-hiring programs
