What the business is
IBM is an enterprise technology company that uses sports partnerships — Wimbledon, the US Open golf, the Masters — as public proving grounds for the technology it sells elsewhere.
The bet
AI that works live at Wimbledon, under maximum scrutiny, has survived a harder test than most enterprise pilots — the showcase itself sells IBM's AI.
How it started
IBM's Wimbledon run began in 1991 with serve-speed radar behind the baselines, continued with the tournament's website in 1995, its app in 2009 and its first AI features in 2017.
What happened
In 2026 the partnership was extended to 2030 to carry out a new digital transformation plan. IBM rebuilt the Wimbledon app and website using its Bob development accelerator, migrating more than 15,000 digital assets — work that traditionally takes five specialists months was done by one engineer in a month, with a 47-minute final transfer, per IBM's Kameryn Stanhouse.
What has to be true
Sport generates enormous volumes of data under pressure, a harder proving ground for AI than a controlled enterprise pilot.
Executive buyers fear public AI failures more than missing AI, so a reliably deployed, visible demonstration addresses the actual purchase objection.
Wimbledon's digital reach of roughly 730 million people gives IBM consumer brand contact for technology most users never notice.
IBM keeps its features 'human-led' with a governance layer scoring confidence and checking bias, to stay on the right side of heritage-sensitive fans.
What can be applied
A showcase customer can be the product: technology that survives public, maximum-scrutiny live operation is its own enterprise sales pitch.
Aftermath
As of July 9, 2026, the partnership ran through 2030 with AI features set to expand. The contrast case hung nearby: Wimbledon's 2025 replacement of 147 years of line judges with Sony's Hawk-Eye electronic calling missed three calls in a quarter-final and drew public doubts from Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu — not IBM's system, but a measure of what a botched rollout costs. IBM has since built a Masters app for Apple Vision Pro and expects tennis to follow.
