What the business is
Designs, builds and operates the world's largest synthetic-aperture-radar microsatellite constellation, selling Earth-observation data and turnkey sovereign satellite systems.
The bet
Radar can be miniaturized below 100 kg — imaging through cloud and darkness — turning continuous monitoring of any point on Earth into a business.
Starting capital
First $2.8M venture round from True Ventures and Lifeline Ventures, plus a €2.4M EU Horizon 2020 SME grant after the 2015 pack-ice monitoring demo.
How it started
Rafał Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila met as students on an Erasmus exchange and spun ICEYE out of Aalto University's Radio Technology Department in 2014. Radar sees at night and through cloud, but satellites carrying it weighed tonnes and cost hundreds of millions. Their first grant proposal promised to shrink a working SAR system into a microsatellite to attract private launch money.
What happened
ICEYE-X1, a 70 kg satellite launched on India's PSLV in January 2018, became the first sub-100 kg radar satellite and Finland's first commercial satellite. Constellation launches followed on SpaceX rideshares. Revenue reached $100M for 2023; funding passed $500M in 2024, then €150M more came in December 2025 at a €2.4B valuation led by General Catalyst. In June 2026 a €1B round — €450M primary at a valuation above €10B — was co-led by General Atlantic and the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund.
What has to be true
The enabling bet was physics, not fashion: SAR imagery works in darkness and through cloud, so it can be promised on a schedule cameras cannot match.
Cost collapsed because the satellite shrank below 100 kg, turning constellation building into repeatable rideshare launches instead of bespoke missions.
Selling whole sovereign systems to governments converted a data vendor into infrastructure, with Poland operational inside twelve months of signing.
The EU's Scaleup Europe Fund chose ICEYE as its first investment, putting European institutional capital behind a European hardware champion.
What can be applied
Shrink the sensor, not the ambition. A physics advantage others ignored — radar that sees in darkness and through cloud — let a two-person university spin-off out-observe state space agencies.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-11 ICEYE is private, scaling, and building toward a European IPO that CEO Rafał Modrzewski has floated publicly. The June 2026 €1B round funds a plan to double radar-satellite capacity by late 2027 as demand surges. Poland's POLSARIS constellation is launching piece by piece (first satellite November 2025, more in March and May 2026), the Netherlands has satellites in orbit, and the company has expanded operations in Finland, Poland, Spain, Greece, Germany and Portugal with 900+ employees.
