IntrCity SmartBus is an Indian intercity bus platform started by RailYatri's founders that runs branded buses with partner operators.

Running branded buses with operators who own the vehicles, splitting net earnings equally, scales faster than owning assets and lets IntrCity set standards.

$30 million round led by A91 Partners at a $140 million valuation; earlier a Series B of over INR 100 Cr from Nandan Nilekani and Samsung Venture Investment

IntrCity began in 2019 as an experiment inside RailYatri, the train-ticket platform run by Manish Rathi and Kapil Raizada. Rathi says passengers with low odds of confirmed train tickets were offered a bus and within months many moved to buses, which led him to launch IntrCity.

Covid-19 hit within months and revenue crashed, though the company had raised over INR 100 Cr in a Series B just before the lockdowns. In February 2020 it planned 2,000 buses by 2022, but around September 2022 it ran about 200 buses carrying about 2 lakh passengers a month. Under its partnership model IntrCity plans routes, demand and fares, the operator pays running costs and net earnings are split equally.

Inc42 reports about 650 buses across 17 states, around eight times the 84 buses before the pandemic, with revenue from operations of INR 317.3 Cr in FY24 against INR 273.9 Cr in FY23. The founder claims over INR 500 Cr in FY25. IntrCity targets INR 700 Cr in FY26 and INR 1,000 Cr within 18-24 months, though competition from NeuGo, FreshBus and FlixBus is increasing.

Rathi says traditional operators who hold assets on their books struggle to scale past a point, while a partnership makes standardization easier.

IntrCity's cloud-enabled bus operating system and IoT, CCTV and driver-alert monitoring let it enforce safety and punctuality on buses it does not own.

AI is used for route planning, demand forecasting and predictive maintenance to reduce downtime.

A hub-and-spoke network around 16-17 hubs links big cities with tier II and III towns.

An asset-light partnership can scale a service brand without owning buses, but the 2022 fleet target was missed by about 1,800 buses and revenue claims are unaudited.

As of 2025-11-06 IntrCity is operating in about 14 of its 16-17 target hubs and piloting EV buses without plans for an EV service yet. FY25 revenue is a founder claim, and the target of INR 1,000 Cr is a forecast. Inc42 notes intensifying competition.
