Builds the two-stage Spectrum rocket (up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit) with in-house Aquila engines, targeting European government and commercial small-satellite launches from Norway.
How it started
Founded in 2018 in Munich by Daniel Metzler and two fellow Technical University of Munich students as a spinout, Isar Aerospace set out to give Europe its own commercial orbital launcher. The plan was vertical integration: design and build the Spectrum rocket and its Aquila engines nearly entirely in-house, then automate production to drive cost down. By March 2025 the company had raised more than €400 million ($430 million), built two rockets, and received a launch license from Norwegian regulators on March 17.
What happened
On March 30, 2025, Spectrum lifted off from Andøya Spaceport — the first orbital launch attempt by a commercial company from continental Europe outside Russia. About 30 seconds in, the vehicle lost attitude control and the flight termination system fired, sending it into an unpowered descent into the sea. Isar called the mission a success — substantial flight data, a validated termination system, an intact pad — and its two-month investigation traced the failure to an unintended vent-valve opening and loss of control at the start of the roll maneuver. The second, qualification flight carrying five CubeSats and one experiment was then scrubbed four times between January and June 2026: a pressurization valve, an intruding vessel, a pressure-vessel leak, and off-nominal fluid systems.

Still pre-orbit: as of September 2026 the qualification flight had not launched, but vehicles 3–7 are in production, a €270 million Series D in June 2026 brought total funding to roughly €870 million, and the launch manifest runs through 2028.
Background
Isar Aerospace was founded in Munich in 2018 by Daniel Metzler and fellow TU Munich students with a bold bet: a lean startup could beat Europe's institutional launcher industry by building small rockets in-house and automating their production. Spectrum, a two-stage rocket designed for up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit, uses nine in-house Aquila engines on its first stage, with structures and software developed almost entirely within the company.
On March 30, 2025, Spectrum became the first orbital launch attempt by a commercial company from continental Europe outside Russia. It lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in Norway, lost attitude control about 30 seconds in, and was terminated by its flight safety system, falling unpowered into the sea. Isar called the flight a success — substantial flight data, a validated termination system, an intact pad. The second flight, Mission 'Onward and Upward', a qualification mission carrying five CubeSats and one experiment under ESA's Boost! programme, has been scrubbed four times: January 2026 on a pressurization valve, March on an intruding vessel that forced the countdown past its window, April on a pressure-vessel leak, and June 2026 on off-nominal fluid systems. As of September 2026 it still had not flown.
Capital and production have kept moving anyway: a €270 million Series D closed in June 2026, bringing total funding to roughly €870 million, vehicles 3–7 are in production, a 40,000 m² automated factory near Munich is being brought up, and the launch manifest extends through 2028 with ESA, NOSA, ElevationSpace and Astroscale among the customers. The bet is not yet won — orbit remains the milestone that turns the story from promising to proven.
What has to be true
- Europe had no private orbital launcher; Isar bet institutional and commercial small-sat demand would pay for one built from scratch.
- Vertical integration and automated production targeted cost per launch — the gap SpaceX proved was decisive — before the vehicle even flew.
- The company redefined the first flight's success criteria as data and pad survival, so a 30-second crash still advanced the program.
- Rapid iteration — a full failure investigation and corrective actions within two months — kept the schedule story credible to investors.

Aftermath
As of September 2026, Isar Aerospace has not yet reached orbit: the qualification flight was scrubbed four times in 2026, most recently on June 15 for off-nominal fluid systems. Expansion continues: a €270 million Series D in June brought total funding to about €870 million; vehicles 3–7 are in production at a 40,000 m² automated facility near Munich; a second launch site in Nova Scotia is agreed; and the manifest extends through 2028 with ESA, NOSA, ElevationSpace and Astroscale missions. The next successful launch decides whether the production-scale bet converts into revenue.
