What the business is
Open-source KVM-over-IP hardware: matchbox-sized boxes giving out-of-band remote control (video capture, keyboard, mouse, virtual media) of any computer, even when it is powered off or locked up
The bet
KVM over IP is an every-machine purchase, not a specialist tool — engineer the price from ~$69 down to $33–42 and put one next to every box you own
How it started
In 2024 the BuildJet team launched JetKVM on Kickstarter: a tiny Ethernet-attached box that plugs into a machine's HDMI and USB and gives browser-based control even when the OS is dead. Jeff Geerling's October 2024 review framed it as 'a remote control rocket pack for any computer' — capabilities usually reserved for enterprise servers — and the firmware was open source from the start.
What happened
The original JetKVM shipped and grew into a small platform: the same web UI, JetKVM Cloud for remote access, extensions for ATX power and serial, and a community around the open firmware. Its October 2025 HN front page (386 points) established it as the default hobbyist IP KVM. For the Mini, announced September 11, 2026, the team started over: they dropped the Rockchip Linux system (SoC, RAM, eMMC) for an ESP32-P4X microcontroller with a hardware H.264 encoder, rewriting the firmware on FreeRTOS — open source from day one. A wireless variant adds an ESP32-C5 radio. Pricing lands at $39 (Ethernet) and $42 (wireless), or $33/$36 per unit in three-packs, shipping October 26, 2026.
What has to be true
The KVM's job — capture video, emulate USB, mount virtual media, stay reachable when the host is off — no longer requires a general-purpose OS; a microcontroller with a hardware H.264 encoder does it.
Removing the Linux stack eliminates the SoC's RAM and eMMC, the largest cost drivers, which is what makes a $39 price possible on a small-batch hardware business.
Two organic HN front pages (386 and 571 points) show a pre-existing audience: homelabbers were already asking for exactly this price point, so demand risk was low.
Open-source firmware builds the trust a security-sensitive device needs — buyers are inviting this box into their BIOS screens and production machines.
What can be applied
Re-engineer around the job, not the parts list: deleting Linux (and its RAM and storage) for a microcontroller cut the price nearly in half without cutting what the tool exists to do
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-19, JetKVM Mini is announced but not yet shipping: both models go on sale October 26, 2026 through authorized resellers, with pre-launch interest registration open. The original JetKVM line, its cloud service, and the extension ecosystem continue alongside. JetKVM OS Services — host-side software that raises capture resolution to 4K and adds shared clipboard, guest terminal and file transfer — is rolling out in the weeks after the announcement and supports the Mini from day one.
