Jotform bootstrapped online forms to 25M users with zero venture funding
Aytekin Tank built Jotform from a 2006 side project into a 25-million-user form platform with no outside capital, growing on product quality and organic SEO.
Jotform
What the business is
Online form builder and no-code automation platform: drag-and-drop forms for collecting data, accepting payments, generating reports, and automating workflows.
Starting capital:Self-funded; the free version was built nights and weekends while Tank kept his day job for the first year
How it started
Aytekin Tank started Jotform in February 2006 after his own frustrating experiences with online forms. He kept his day job for the first year, gave the product away free, iterated on user feedback, and only introduced paid plans in March 2007.
What happened
By 2016 Jotform had roughly 3 million registered users; by 2022 more than 10 million, with a team approaching 400. Marketing was almost entirely organic SEO run by an in-house team of about two dozen specialists. In May 2024 the company announced it had passed 25 million users, a 25% year-over-year increase in customer acquisition, and another consecutive year of 50% revenue growth.
How it ended up
Jotform remains privately held, founder-led, and bootstrapped, with no outside investors. Its May 2024 announcement reported 25 million users and 50% year-over-year revenue growth, and the company has continued expanding into enterprise offerings and AI agents.
Background
Jotform is an online form builder and no-code automation platform founded by Aytekin Tank in February 2006. Its bet was that a form builder could grow into a large, profitable business without any venture capital, funded only by its own revenue and built on product quality and organic search traffic.
Tank started the company as a side project, kept his day job for the first year, and gave the product away free from February 2006 to March 2007 so early users could shape it before a paid version existed. Jotform then grew on a freemium model, with in-house SEO as its primary marketing channel and no sales team for most of its history.
By 2016 Jotform had roughly 3 million registered users; by 2022 it passed 10 million with a team approaching 400. In May 2024 the company announced it had surpassed 25 million global users, a 25% year-over-year increase in customer acquisition, and another consecutive year of 50% revenue growth, with enterprise revenue up 90% year over year.
Jotform has never taken outside investment: in a July 2022 interview, VP of enterprise operations Steve Hartert said the company had 'never taken a dime of any investor money anywhere' and that all growth had been purely organic.
What has to be true
- The founder's own frustration with online forms gave him a product he personally cared about, so he could iterate free for a year before monetizing.
- Freemium plus consumption-based pricing created a self-serve upgrade path without a sales team or marketing budget.
- In-house SEO made customer acquisition nearly free, letting revenue fund growth instead of investor capital.
- No board or investor KPIs let the company stay private, profitable, and founder-led for 18 years.
What can be applied
Not taking money is a deliberate strategy: a product-led, SEO-driven business can compound for 18 years without investors if the founder keeps product and customer feedback first.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Jotform is still privately held, bootstrapped, and founder-led, with more than 25 million users and 50% year-over-year revenue growth reported in its May 2024 announcement. The company has expanded into enterprise automation, AI agents, and a reseller program while continuing to report no outside investment.
