What the business is
Subscription online matchmaking platform in India, with an AI matchmaker called Genie and offline events for singles
The bet
A subscription AI matchmaker with scam-free profiles and offline community events could win Indian singles from Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, Aisle and Truly Madly
Starting capital
$2.5 million from angel investors in August 2024
How it started
Juleo was founded in 2023 by Varun Sud and Chiranjeev Ghai. It sold subscription-based matchmaking, with an AI matchmaker called Genie that selected potential matches and managed the logistics of in-person meetings, and women's profiles were private by default. It later added offline community events for singles.
What happened
In August 2024 it raised $2.5M from angel investors including Livspace co-founder Ramakant Sharma, CRED founder Kunal Shah, Acko co-founder Ruchi Deepak and Groww co-founders Harsh Jain and Lalit Keshre. It competed with Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid and Bumble, which were doubling down on India, and with local players such as Aisle and Truly Madly.
How it ended up
On 3 February 2026 Inc42 reported that co-founder Sud announced on LinkedIn that Juleo was pausing its services after failing to raise more capital. He said the company had found product-market fit but could not win institutional investors, citing baggage from past failures in the space. He hinted at a new consumer AI venture.
What has to be true
It failed to raise further capital, according to co-founder Varun Sud
Institutional investors were put off by past failures among Indian matchmaking and dating startups, he said
It competed with global apps such as Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid and Bumble, which had doubled down on India, and with local players
Its funding to that point was $2.5M from angels, which left no cushion once the next round did not come
What can be applied
Angel money can fund early usage, but a category with a record of failures makes institutional follow-on hard, and the founders' own claim of product-market fit is not proof.
Aftermath
As of 2026-02-03, Juleo had paused its services, and co-founder Varun Sud hinted at founding a new venture in consumer AI. The usage figures it cited were self-reported.
