Coalition sells cyber insurance backed by proactive scanning of customers' digital footprints; it bought Jumbo, a consumer app for controlling privacy settings across Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Maps and Instagram.

With no sustainable consumer app and no B2B product, Jumbo's remaining value was its privacy-security engineering team — worth more inside a cyber insurer.

$28.5M raised: a $3.5M seed in 2018, $8M across 2019–2020 led by Balderton Capital, and $17M in 2022 led by Index Ventures at a $77M post-money valuation. Acquisition terms undisclosed.

Jumbo CEO Pierre Valade, whose previous startup Sunrise was already backed by Balderton, raised a $3.5M seed in 2018 led by Thrive Capital's Josh Miller and Nextview Ventures' Rob Go.

Jumbo added a security angle — checking breach databases for your phone number, email, password and address — and partnered with IdentityForce to bundle US identity-theft insurance. It removed its paid subscription after concluding the model couldn't be sustainable long-run, and floated a B2B version that never materialized.

Announced July 12, 2023: Coalition acquired the Jumbo team in what a source called a small acqui-hire, terms undisclosed. The app stopped receiving updates; users can export social-media archives and 2FA codes before it shuts down entirely in 2024.

For Coalition, an acqui-hire buys years of consumer privacy-and-security engineering without taking on an app or user base it doesn't want.

For Jumbo, the free pivot didn't produce a sustainable business and the B2B version never arrived — the team was the last sellable asset.

Cyber insurers compete on proactive risk data, and in-house security talent complements the scanning Coalition already runs on customers' digital footprints.

The shutdown closes a $28.5M funding arc built on the premise that consumers would manage their own privacy — a premise that never became a business.

When a consumer product can't find a business model, its specialized engineering can still be the asset that sells — acquirers sometimes buy the team and bury the app.

As of July 12, 2023 the Jumbo app was frozen — no more updates — with export of social-media archives and 2FA codes open ahead of a full shutdown in 2024. The team, or part of it, joins Coalition, which was fresh off a $250M Series F at a $5B valuation.
