Kagi bets people will pay for ad-free search: bootstrapped to $1M revenue with no VC

Kagi charges subscribers instead of selling ads; the founder self-funded it for four years, crossed $1M annual revenue in 2023, and raised only from its users.

The betPeople will pay a subscription for search that is ad-free, private and high-quality, and that revenue model alone can sustain a small company without venture capital.Scaling

What the business is

Sells subscriptions to an ad-free, privacy-first search engine, plus the Orion browser and AI assistant products, instead of selling ads or user data.

Starting capitalSelf-funded by the founder for the first four years; $670K raised from users in 2023 ($2.4M total from users by 2024); no VC

How it started

Vladimir Prelovac founded Kagi in May 2018 in Palo Alto after selling an earlier software company. He funded the startup entirely himself for its first four years, starting with AI research on the belief that any future search engine needs a strong instant-answering component.

What happened

Kagi Inc. incorporated in March 2022; Kagi Search and Orion entered public beta and thousands of people started paying within three months. In 2023 Kagi crossed the $1M annual revenue milestone, began publishing live usage stats, and raised $670K from its own users, its first external money. By early 2025 the company had roughly 40 people, 37,000+ members and about 750,000 search queries a day, still with zero VC funding.

How it ended up

Kagi is still independent and profitable, with no venture capital. It has expanded from search into Maps, Translate, News, AI assistants and teams plans, and publishes its live stats publicly.

Background

Kagi is a search engine founded in May 2018 by Vladimir Prelovac in Palo Alto, built on the bet that people will pay for search. Instead of selling ads and tracking users, it charges subscriptions and promises an ad-free, privacy-respecting index that favors quality sites over ad-heavy pages.

Prelovac self-funded the company for its first four years, starting with AI research and a failed first attempt at premium search called Donna.gg. Kagi Search and the Orion browser entered public beta in 2022, and thousands of paying users arrived within three months, proving the willingness to pay was real.

In 2023 Kagi crossed $1M in annual revenue and raised $670K from its own users, its first external funding. By early 2025 the Pragmatic Engineer described Kagi as a bootstrapped, profitable company with no VC money, about 40 employees, 37,000+ members and roughly 750,000 daily queries.

As of 2026 the company had grown to about 50 people and expanded into Maps, News, Translate, AI assistants and an API, still publishing live stats and still owned by its founder-led team rather than investors.

What has to be true

  • Ad-funded search creates an incentive to prioritize ads over results; a paid product removes that conflict for both company and users.
  • Google's roughly 90% share and ~$200B in search-ad revenue make a paid challenger look hopeless, yet Kagi's niche is loyal, growing and profitable.
  • Self-funding forced the company to keep costs lean and build things users actually pay for, rather than features that impress investors.
  • Raising from users instead of VCs kept ownership and incentives aligned with customers.

What can be applied

Pick a business model the incumbent structurally cannot copy: Google cannot charge for search without cannibalizing its ad machine, which leaves a small paid, ad-free alternative a real niche to own.

Aftermath

As of September 2026 Kagi's official timeline shows a 50-person team, Orion out of beta, Kagi News, the Translate app and a Search API preview, still with no venture capital. The company publishes live stats for members, queries and families, and continues expanding from search into maps, AI assistants and team plans.
