Lemon's crypto-everyday bet: 5M users, profitable, $20M Series B for LatAm

Argentine crypto wallet bets everyday payments go on-chain; 5M users, 1M+ monthly actives, profitable, $20M Series B for LatAm expansion

Lemon

The betThat ordinary Argentines would hold and spend crypto — pesos and bitcoin in one app with a Visa card — as a daily inflation hedge, not a trading terminal.Scaling

What the business is

Argentine fintech whose Lemon Cash app combines pesos and crypto in one wallet, with a dual Visa prepaid card that pays cashback in Bitcoin.

Starting capitalUS$50K from family and friends at founding (2019); US$16.3M round led by Kingsway Capital (2021); US$66M total raised by Oct 2025, including the US$20M Series B co-led by F-Prime and ParaFi

How it started

Founded in Buenos Aires in 2019 by Marcelo Cavazzoli and Borja Martel with US$50,000 from family and friends, betting that Argentines — living with inflation and capital controls — would embrace an app where pesos and bitcoin live side by side; it was Argentina's first dual-currency crypto app.

What happened

Raised US$16.3M in 2021 led by Kingsway Capital, with Coinbase Ventures, Draper Associates, Valor Capital and Banco Supervielle among backers; launched the dual Visa Lemon Card with Bitcoin cashback; survived the 2022 crypto bear market and became profitable; entered Peru, adding 1M users and 150,000+ Visa cards in under a year; added Bitcoin to its corporate treasury in April 2025.

How it ended up

Still running and expanding: the Oct 2025 US$20M Series B, co-led by F-Prime and ParaFi, funds entry into Colombia, Mexico and Chile, a Brazil relaunch, and a goal of 10M users within 12 months.

Background

Lemon is an Argentine fintech founded in Buenos Aires in 2019 by Marcelo Cavazzoli and Borja Martel with US$50,000 from family and friends. The bet: Argentines living through inflation and capital controls would keep pesos and bitcoin in the same wallet and spend both with a Visa card, rather than treat crypto as a trading terminal. It was the first dual-currency crypto app in the Argentine market.

The wedge was making crypto tangible. The Lemon Cash app pairs a wallet with a dual Visa prepaid card that lets users pay in pesos or crypto and earn cashback in Bitcoin, so a coffee purchase becomes the on-ramp to holding digital assets. A US$16.3M round in 2021, led by Kingsway Capital with Coinbase Ventures, Draper Associates, Valor Capital and Banco Supervielle, funded product development and the first expansion push, starting with Peru.

Lemon survived the 2022 crypto bear market and became profitable. By October 2025 it reported 5M users and 1M+ monthly active users, was Argentina's most-used crypto app per Sensor Tower, had issued 150,000+ Visa cards and reached 1M users in Peru within a year, projected ~US$9.3B in 2025 processed volume (up 57% year over year), and custodied over US$160M in user assets with public proof-of-reserves.

In October 2025 Lemon closed a US$20M Series B co-led by F-Prime and ParaFi, with DRW Venture Capital, VanEck, Endeavor Catalyst, Persea VC, Alumni Ventures, Lambda Class and Aave founder Stani Kulechov participating — the largest crypto round in Latin America in three years. The funds back launches in Colombia, Mexico and Chile, a Brazil relaunch, and a goal of 10M users within 12 months.

What has to be true

  • Argentina's macro situation made crypto adoption uniquely strong: four of every ten people opening a crypto app in Latin America do so from Argentina, per Lemon.
  • A dual pesos-plus-crypto Visa card removed the abstraction problem, letting users pay for daily purchases and get Bitcoin cashback.
  • Profitable growth before expansion let Lemon raise on its own terms instead of depending on new investment to stay alive.
  • Peru served as a testbed: 1M users and 150,000+ Visa cards in under a year proved the playbook could transfer across the region.

What can be applied

A financial product wins by meeting users where they live: Lemon made crypto usable in everyday pesos transactions, and Argentina's inflation did the customer acquisition.

Aftermath

As of October 9, 2025, Lemon had 5M users and 1M+ monthly active users, was profitable, projected ~US$9.3B in 2025 processed volume, custodied over US$160M in user assets, and was using its US$20M Series B to launch in Colombia, Mexico and Chile, relaunch in Brazil, and target 10M users within 12 months.
