Lessmore's Arrows Puzzle Escape: German studio tops global mobile downloads in May 2026
A text-free arrow puzzle from a 30-person German studio became the world's most-downloaded mobile game, via Tencent's Miniclip.
Lessmore UG (Lessmore GmbH)
What the business is
A German mobile-game studio shipping text-free, hyper-casual puzzle and idle games (Eatventure, We Are Warriors, Arrows – Puzzle Escape) to a worldwide audience.
How it started
Three founders (Samer Al Dafai, Jeremy Ries, Joshua Hemmerich) founded Lessmore in 2021 as a remote-first studio spanning Europe. Eatventure launched in February 2022 after Sophie Brügmann pitched it at Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki and took second place in the indie pitch; by March 2025 Appmagic counted 69.3M downloads and ~$28M in IAP for it.
What happened
We Are Warriors added ~36.3M installs from September 2023. Tencent's Swiss subsidiary Miniclip quietly acquired Lessmore at the end of 2024 (announced March 2025, undisclosed sum), betting on the studio's speed at prototyping and releasing hit casual titles. Arrows – Puzzle Escape soft-launched in mid-2025 and went fully live in August 2025; from May 2026 it topped Sensor Tower's global download chart, with India driving roughly a third of installs.
How it ended up
Still live and scaling. Tencent's Q2 2026 earnings highlighted Arrows – Puzzle Escape as the quarter's most-downloaded mobile game with strong in-app advertising revenue; a follow-up, Arrows Puzzle: Tap Puzzle Games, took #3 in July 2026 downloads (19M+), while the original slid to #11 (11.4M) in the same month.
Background
Lessmore was founded in 2021 as a remote-first German game studio betting that a small team could compete in global casual games by iterating fast on simple, universally understood mechanics. Its first hit, Eatventure (2022), an idle restaurant-management game, accumulated 69.3M downloads and roughly $28M in IAP by March 2025, and We Are Warriors added another ~36.3M installs.
The bet caught Tencent's attention. Miniclip, Tencent's Swiss casual-games arm, quietly acquired Lessmore at the end of 2024 and announced the deal in March 2025. The studio's next title, Arrows – Puzzle Escape, launched in August 2025: a minimalist puzzle where players slide arrows out of a grid without collisions, needing no text or tutorial. Monetized through ads rather than paywalls, it took off in markets like India, which drove roughly a third of downloads.
By May 2026 Sensor Tower ranked it the most-downloaded mobile game in the world, and Tencent's Q2 2026 earnings cited it as the quarter's global download leader with strong in-app advertising revenue and 100M+ lifetime downloads. Its H1 2026 rank was #4 globally, and the arrow-puzzle category it originated spawned dozens of imitators.
The run cooled in July 2026, when downloads dropped to 11.4M as Miniclip pushed a companion title, Arrows Puzzle: Tap Puzzle Games, to #3. Lessmore remains Tencent's flagship example of buying small proven studios instead of incubating casual hits in-house.
What has to be true
- A two-person-deep studio can win at global scale when the core loop needs no language, no account, and no tutorial.
- Ad-only monetization turned a free puzzle into an asset for Tencent's international games revenue without IAP friction.
- Acquiring proven small studios let Miniclip enter new casual categories faster than building hits from scratch.
- Chart rankings made the studio's progress verifiable month by month, from soft launch to global #1 to category saturation.
What can be applied
A text-free ruleset travels further than any localization: zero-language puzzles and pure ad monetization scaled across India and Latin America, letting a tiny remote studio out-download genre giants.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Lessmore is live and scaling under Miniclip. Tencent's Q2 2026 results singled out Arrows – Puzzle Escape as the most-downloaded mobile game of the quarter with robust in-app advertising revenue, and AppMagic put it at #4 globally for H1 2026. In July 2026 the original dropped to 11.4M downloads (#11) while Miniclip's second arrows title took #3 with 19M+, and rivals like Learnings' Amaze Go copied the mechanic into the top ten. The studio's small-team, fast-iteration model now anchors one of Tencent's clearest casual-game successes.
