Lethal Company: a solo dev's $10 co-op horror sold ~10M copies in 3 months
A solo developer's co-op horror about scrapping moons went viral in Steam Early Access, selling ~10M copies and grossing an estimated ~$113.9M in three months.
Lethal Company
What the business is
A premium Steam Early Access co-op horror in which crews of up to four 'Company workers' land on abandoned moons, scavenge scrap to meet a profit quota and survive monsters — built so that friends scream, laugh and betray each other over voice chat.
Starting capital:None reported — solo-developed, self-published Steam Early Access title.
How it started
Zeekerss, a developer who had been releasing experimental horror games since around 2012 (starting with Roblox tools and itch.io titles), launched Lethal Company into Steam Early Access in late October 2023 at a low price point as a one-person project.
What happened
Growth was word-of-mouth driven: within weeks the game passed ~115,000 concurrent players and then hovered around 120,000–240,000 for months. By January 2024, media estimates using Push to Talk's Boxleiter-style method put sales near 10 million copies, with ~$113.9M gross revenue and ~$33.6M net, plus hundreds of thousands of Steam reviews. Zeekerss kept updating the game, and it later crossed over into Fortnite cosmetics — rare mainstream recognition for an indie title (Metro, 2025-11-04).
How it ended up
Still operating: as of Metro's 2025-11-04 report, Zeekerss continued developing the 'two-year-old co-op horror hit' while also releasing a free text-based horror game, Welcome to the Dark Place, saying he only wants to charge for games he is sure most players will enjoy.
Background
Lethal Company is a co-op horror game developed and published by a single developer, Zeekerss, who had spent years making experimental horror games on Roblox, itch.io and Steam before this project. It launched into Steam Early Access in late October 2023 as a cheap, self-published title: crews of up to four players are 'Company workers' who land on abandoned, monster-filled moons, scavenge scrap to meet a profit quota and try not to leave anyone behind.
The game's real hook is social. Players guide each other with walkie-talkies and ship radar, and the panic, blame and betrayal that erupt over voice chat became the content that spread it. Within weeks the game drew around 115,000 concurrent players and stayed between roughly 120,000 and 240,000 for months. By January 2024, estimates built on Push to Talk's Boxleiter-style method reported ~10 million copies sold, ~$113.9M gross revenue and ~$33.6M net for the solo developer.
Zeekerss continued to update the Early Access game through 2024 and 2025, and Lethal Company crossed into Fortnite with 'The Employee' cosmetics. In late 2025 he released a completely free text-based horror game, Welcome to the Dark Place, explaining he only wants to sell games he is certain most players will enjoy — a statement of intent that fits the same ethos behind Lethal Company's word-of-mouth success.
What has to be true
- Design for the social moment: voice-chat chaos made every play session a potential clip, so players and streamers did the marketing a budget would normally buy.
- Low price + Early Access lowered the barrier to trying a weird premise, and a small scope let one developer ship fast and iterate on feedback.
- Viral spikes need durable retention: the quota-loop gave friend groups a repeatable structure to come back to, turning a fad into months of 120,000+ concurrent players.
- Success stayed personal: the developer kept the project small, kept updating it, and treated commercial releases as exceptions rather than the default.
What can be applied
The product was the marketing: one developer built voice-chat moments players spread for free, so social experience — not content volume — let a solo studio outcompete bigger teams.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02, Lethal Company is still in Steam Early Access under Zeekerss; Metro's 2025-11-04 report calls it a still-updated 'two-year-old co-op horror hit' with an estimated 10M+ copies sold in its first months and a Fortnite cosmetics crossover. He then released Welcome to the Dark Place, a free text-based horror game (late October 2025), saying he only charges for games he is sure most players will enjoy. No publisher, investor or acquisition has been reported.
