What the business is
LINE MAN Wongnai is Thailand's largest on-demand lifestyle platform: food and grocery delivery, ride-hailing and messenger services from LINE MAN, restaurant reviews from Wongnai, POS software for 70,000+ merchants, plus LINE Pay-integrated payments and lending.
The bet
Go deeper, not wider: stack delivery, reviews, POS and LINE Pay fintech into one Thai ecosystem, reach profitability, then IPO in 2027.
Starting capital
US$110M Series A alongside the 2020 merger; US$265M Series B (Sep 2022) led by GIC and LINE, joined by BRV Capital Management, PTT Oil and Retail (OR), Bualuang Ventures and Taiwan Mobile, valuing LMWN above US$1B as Thailand's largest tech startup.
How it started
LINE MAN began in 2016 inside LINE's Thai unit as a delivery app; Yod Chinsupakul, an engineer who studied in the US, had co-founded the restaurant-review site Wongnai in 2010. In 2020 the pair merged with a US$110M Series A: delivery demand on one side, a review network reaching close to a million merchants on the other. The merged company chose depth over spread — food, grocery and ride services across all 77 provinces, offering delivery options to 700,000 restaurants — instead of regional expansion.
What happened
In September 2022 LINE MAN Wongnai raised a US$265M Series B led by GIC and LINE (with BRV, PTT OR, Bualuang Ventures and Taiwan Mobile), becoming Thailand's first startup valued above US$1B. It layered on Wongnai POS — #1 in Thai food and beverage, 50,000+ merchants by 2022 and 70,000+ by 2026 — acquired beauty-and-wellness booking startup Jera Cloud, launched telepharmacy, hired 50+ AI engineers and integrated LINE Pay plus lending for merchants and riders. Revenue hit THB 16.7B in 2024 (+44% YoY), yet the year still closed with a THB 356M net loss in a price war with Grab and foodpanda.
How it ended up
The strategy flipped to profit: LINE MAN Wongnai says it achieved its first-ever profitability in 2025, roughly five years after the merger, while keeping Thailand's #1 food-delivery position (Momentum Works: 41% of GMV in 2025, more than double its 2020 share). It targets a 2027 IPO, plans a THB 10B (about ¥40B) AI investment and, after postponing a domestic listing in early 2026, was weighing the Stock Exchange of Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Nasdaq.
What has to be true
Data flywheel: delivery orders, reviews and POS transactions converge on one dataset, letting LMWN sell advertising, payments and credit that pure-delivery rivals cannot.
Merchant lock-in: POS software inside 70,000+ Thai restaurants made the platform operational infrastructure, not just an order channel.
Local depth over regional scale: Yod publicly refused international expansion, arguing hyperlocal execution beats what global platforms can match in Thailand.
Profitability as the IPO precondition: first profit in 2025, a THB 10B AI budget and a hard 2027 IPO deadline signal a shift from subsidized market-share war to capital-market readiness.
Parental distribution: LINE's dominant Thai messaging reach plus LINE Pay integration gave LMWN cheap user acquisition that Grab and foodpanda lacked.
What can be applied
Go deep before going wide: delivery, reviews, POS and payments in one market compound into data and switching costs that regional scale cannot copy — then prove profitability before the IPO.
Aftermath
As of June 2026 LINE MAN Wongnai was private and profitable: first profit in 2025, 10M+ monthly users, 500,000 merchants, 250,000 riders, a THB 10B AI plan and 2027 as the IPO deadline. The venue (SET, Singapore, Hong Kong or Nasdaq) was still being finalized after an early-2026 shift away from an immediate domestic listing, and management guided 2026 revenue growth of at least 20%. Risks: an ongoing price war with Grab keeps margins thin, the AI and fintech expansion adds cost and credit risk, and the deliberate stay-in-Thailand strategy ties growth to one economy.
