Ludo King's lockdown surge: an Indian classic earns 1 billion downloads

The betA free mobile Ludo that runs offline on patchy networks would win India — a board game every family already knows, no account, no paywall, multiplayer from the start.Scaling

What the business is

Ludo King is a free-to-play mobile adaptation of the classic board game Ludo, built by Mumbai-based Gametion Technologies with online, offline and cross-platform multiplayer.

How it started

Mumbai-based developer Vikash Jaiswal built Ludo King and released it in February 2016. The game grew steadily but unremarkably until India's COVID-19 lockdowns gave families stuck at home a shared pastime.

What happened

During the pandemic the game became India's go-to comfort app: 320 million people turned to Ludo King during the lockdown, DAUs rose from 15M to 32M through 2020, and MAUs climbed from 110M to 142M. It was the No. 1 downloaded game on India's App Store in 2020 and had been topping Google Play since 2018 (Animation Xpress).

How it ended up

Ludo King crossed 500M downloads in December 2020 — the first Indian game to reach half a billion on Google Play — and passed 1B downloads on Google Play in February 2024, while continuing to rank among India's top 10 downloaded apps.

Background

Ludo King was a bet on familiarity. Mumbai's Gametion Technologies, led by founder Vikash Jaiswal, released a free mobile version of Ludo in February 2016 with online play, offline matches and cross-platform multiplayer — a game every Indian family already knew, with none of the friction (accounts, paywalls, strong data connections) that kept casual players away. It grew steadily for years.

The COVID-19 lockdowns turned steady into spectacular: 320 million people played Ludo King during the lockdown, and by December 2020 the game's daily active users had more than doubled from 15M to 32M while monthly actives rose from 110M to 142M (Animation Xpress). It was the No. 1 downloaded game on India's App Store in 2020 and had consistently topped Google Play since 2018, and it surpassed heavy-hitters like Candy Crush Saga, PUBG Mobile, Clash of Clans and Subway Surfers in monthly active users in India (GamingonPhone).

On December 28, 2020, Ludo King crossed 500 million downloads — the first Indian-made game to reach half a billion on Google Play. The milestone kept compounding: on February 26, 2024, GamingonPhone reported the game had crossed 1 billion downloads on Google Play alone, reaching the billion club in a shorter span than it took to reach 500M; the game remained one of India's top 10 most downloaded apps.

What has to be true

  • Zero learning curve: Ludo is a game every Indian family already knows, so adoption was instant when lockdowns forced people home.
  • The product was engineered for the market's constraints: offline play and cross-platform multiplayer kept it usable on patchy networks and low-end devices.
  • The pandemic was an exogenous tailwind: 320M people turned to the game to pass lockdown time, converting a steady hit into a national habit.
  • Sessions measured in minutes kept engagement high long after reopening: an average user spent about 32 minutes a day in the game across two to three sessions (Animation Xpress).

What can be applied

Digitizing a familiar cultural classic can beat original IP where recognition trumps novelty: strip out cost, account and connectivity barriers, and the game's own fame does the marketing.

Aftermath

Ludo King's chart run outlasted the pandemic. It remained one of India's most-downloaded apps through the 2020s and crossed 1 billion Google Play downloads in February 2024; Gametion kept shipping new modes, seasonal themes and features (the game added voice chat and a Mask Mode during the earlier lockdown surge). The title effectively defined the Indian casual-games benchmark that later entrants — including Gameberry Labs' rival Ludo Star and a wave of desi board-game clones — measured themselves against, and it stayed in the top tier of India's download charts at the 2024 milestone report.
