What the business is
Venture-backed subscription podcast platform mixing free shows with exclusive paid originals, launched April 2019.
The bet
That listeners would pay a monthly fee for exclusive premium podcasts at $7.99 — the cut admits the launch price was not converting.
Starting capital
$100 million raised before launch.
How it started
Luminary launched in April 2019 on a premium model: use free podcasts to lure listeners into its app, then convert them to pay for originals. The model immediately raised the ire of podcasters — Luminary stripped show notes (which can carry sponsored links) and rerouted traffic so creators could not tell where their listeners came from.
What happened
The Daily, The Joe Rogan Experience and Blackout pulled their content; Gimlet and Parcast never joined; PodcastOne and iHeartRadio removed their networks. In October 2019 the company replaced co-founder Matt Sacks with former HBO executive Simon Sutton as CEO, moving Sacks to executive chairman. On 16 January 2020, confirmed by the company, it cut the US price to $4.99 from $7.99 and added a $35 annual plan; UK pricing fell to £3.99 from £6.99 and Australia to A$5.99 from A$7.99, effective 14 January.
What has to be true
The $7.99 fee was the most unpopular part of a troubled launch; cutting it within nine months is a public admission the launch price misread willingness to pay.
Existing subscribers were converted down to $4.99 rather than kept at the old rate — retention was worth more than defending the price.
The $35 annual plan trades monthly revenue for commitment after a year of churn-prone headlines.
The repricing followed a leadership change: ex-HBO CEO Simon Sutton inherited the problem three months before the cut.
What can be applied
A contested launch price is a hypothesis, not a promise: repricing within nine months, adding an annual option and keeping promo subscribers whole is cheaper than defending a fee the market rejects.
Aftermath
As of 16 January 2020, US listeners paid $4.99 monthly or $35 a year, UK £3.99 and Australia A$5.99, effective 14 January; subscribers who had taken the holiday promotion kept that price for a year. New shows from Soledad O'Brien, Alex Gibney and Franklin Leonard were announced as coming.
